Commonly used dental mouthwashes and SARS CoV ‐2 – the road to what we know today
AbstractThe aim of this brief overview is to give clinicians a background for assessing publications presentingin vivo human clinical trials regarding the effect of common dental mouthwashes on SARS Cov-2 virus. It explains how the effects of oral mouthwashes on oro-nasally transmitted infectious virus was assessed in the early phase of the Covid-19 pandemic. The method of virus quantification including effect measures and factors, trial design that may cause flaws in the effect estimates presented in publications are explained. The status ofin vivo human clinical trials regarding the anti-virucidal effect of sodium lauryl...

Influence of total temporomandibular joint prosthesis on chewing performance and quality of life
ConclusionIndividuals who underwent TMJ reconstruction surgery with a total prosthesis seem to have a decrease in the ability to mix or grind food. These individuals also showed impaired daily and/or professional activities due to physical and emotional conditions. (Source: Oral Surgery)

Age matters if you are cheese, wine or a third molar: Correlating age with the indications for and complications following third molar removal
ConclusionOlder patients are more likely to experience a slower postoperative course following third molar removal, as well as increased complications. Prophylactic removal of symptom-free third molars may be justified to prevent adjacent caries, periodontal disease and odontogenic infections later in life. (Source: Oral Surgery)

Radiation ‐induced osteosarcoma involving the mandible—Report of a rare diagnosis
ConclusionsOsteosarcoma should be considered if changes are seen in previously stable irradiated bone with bony destruction and a soft tissue mass. This case highlights the importance of synthesis of clinical, radiological and pathological findings in the diagnosis of such lesions, especially where the histology initially suggested a benign process. Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of solitary fibrous tumour: A case report
AbstractSolitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon soft tissue lesion, and even rarer in the oral cavity, where it presents a similar clinical presentation to other lesions that affect the oral cavity. Due to its broad morphological spectrum, the histopathological diagnosis might be challenging and, for a definite diagnosis, the use of complementary tools is usually required, such as immunohistochemistry. We aimed to report a case of a 31-year-old man with an asymptomatic, slightly purplish nodule located on the dorsum of the tongue. The intraoral physical examination revealed the presence of a nodular exophytic lesion a...

Odontogenic infection; a pain in the back …
We report such a case where the haematogenous spread of bacteria from a 64-year-old man's odontogenic infection was established as the probable cause of his discitis. He presented to the accident and emergency twice complaining of back pain, pyrexia, and tachycardia, he was subsequently diagnosed with discitis and a para-spinal abscess. Both resolved following extraction of the infected tooth and long-term antibiotics. (Source: Oral Surgery)

Risk Factors and Current Trends in Maxillofacial Trauma: An Epidemiologic Study at a Major Trauma Center of North India
ConclusionRoad traffic accidents continue to be responsible for maximum trauma. Multidisciplinary assessment of every trauma victim is essential. This study can help formulate rigorous injury preventive schemes by distinguishing and analyzing maxillofacial trauma. Advocation and strict implementation of helmet and seatbelt use with heavy penalty for drinking and driving can lead to reduction of maxillofacial injuries. (Source: Oral Surgery)

Unusual exuberant koilocytic proliferation in odontogenic keratocyst
AbstractKoilocytes are characterized by peculiar histomorphologic features and are a reflection of underlying human papilloma viral (HPV) infection. Although koilocytes are present in many oral pathologies, their presence in odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) has received very little attention in the literature. When present in OKC, koilocytes are limited to the epithelial thickness and rarely involve the full thickness. In the present paper, we reported an unusual exuberant intramural koilocytic proliferation in OKC epithelium with mild invasion into the underlying connective tissue stroma. (Source: Oral Surgery)

Dental Negligence: Root Cause Analysis of an oral surgery Expert Witness's experience
ConclusionNegligence cases and complaints are increasingly a part of healthcare, and the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to have compounded this situation due to reduced capacity, access barriers, deskilling, and lack of hands-on training. There are however many ways to manage and mitigate common errors contributing to cases, and we hope to have been able to highlight these and suggest how they may be avoided in future cases.
