The curious case of inability to open one eye after ipsilateral Posterior Superior Alveolar Nerve block
We present a case of 50  years old female who developed ophthalmic complications following Posterior Superior Alveolar Nerve Block administration during extraction of left maxillary second molar.ResultsA clinical diagnosis of transient oculomotor palsy was made. Constant assurance about the transient nature of the symptoms was given to the patient. The patient started recovering after 30 minutes and recovered fully in about 2 hours.Clinical significanceClinicians should be well aware about the ophthalmic effects of dental anesthesia, this should always be kept in the back of mind that such complications are mostly transi...

Spontaneous Clearance of a Displaced Root in the Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report
We present a case of a patient that underwent extraction of his maxillary first molar, with the displacement of the disto-buccal root into his maxillary sinus during the procedure. Subsequently the patient was referred to the Oral Surgery Department at Birmingham Dental Hospital and retrieval of the root was planned. However, the root was spontaneously cleared prior to surgery. Investigations, management and complications of this case are discussed. The importance of pre-operative imaging to avoid unnecessary treatment is highlighted by this case. (Source: Oral Surgery)

Efficacy of anterior middle superior alveolar nerve block given by computerized controlled local anesthesia delivery system (CCLAD) in the extraction of maxillary teeth ‐ a randomized controlled trial
The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of computerized-controlled local anesthesia Delivery (CCLAD) system for extraction of maxillary teeth using the Anterior Middle Superior Alveolar (AMSA) nerve block technique in comparison to injection with a self-aspirating syringe. A randomized, controlled trial with a split-mouth design was conducted where each study sample (n=17) was part of two groups. In group E (experimental group), AMSA nerve block was given using CCLAD system and in group C (control group), AMSA nerve block was given using a self-aspirating syringe for the extraction of orthodontically indicated maxillary...

Surgical management of peri ‐implantitis: a narrative review
ConclusionSurgical interventions for peri-implantitis appear effective at reducing clinical signs of inflammation in the short-term. There is no reliable evidence to determine which methods are most effective. Universal adoption of the 2017 World Workshop definition of peri-implantitis by future studies is a prerequisite for the development of standardised evidence-based protocols for the treatment of peri-implantitis. Lemierre ’s Syndrome from Odontogenic Infection causing Thrombophlebitis within the External and Internal Jugular Veins – A Case Report
AbstractLemierre ’s Syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition primarily caused by anaerobic bacteria within in the oropharyngeal region { TA \s “1” }. It largely affects otherwise healthy individuals, following an oropharyngeal infection, leading to sepsis and thrombophlebitis of the intern al jugular vein. Management can involve a prolonged course of antibiotics, exclusion of the source of infection, surgical drainage and anti-coagulant therapy. This case report describes a rare presentation of this condition causing thrombosis within theexternal jugular vein and significant sepsis in an otherwise...

Should we Stay Aware of Monkeypox Maxillofacial Lesions?
AbstractMonkeypox is an endemic infectious disease commonly observed only in Central Africa, however in the last month WHO considered it an international outbreak, with several cases described in a short span. Oral surgeons are exposed to patients at risk for monkeypox and some of the most prevalent lesions could be observed firstly in the maxillofacial region. The knowledge of the common signs and symptoms of the monkeypox and associated diseases is fundamental to the report and referral to infectious diseases centers for definitive treatment and public health control. This letter to the editor summarizes the associated d...

A case of synchronous malignant tumours in a parotid gland
AbstractSynchronous unilateral tumours within the parotid gland of differing histological type are rare, accounting for less than 1% of parotid gland neoplasms. Here we present a case of a primary tumour of the parotid gland alongside a synchronous metastasis at the same site, highlighting the diagnostic and treatment challenges present, especially where a core biopsy is unable to sample the multiple tumour types. Though rare multiple tumour types must be kept in the differential diagnosis of multifocal salivary gland disease. (Source: Oral Surgery)

The role of radiology in risk assessment and management of oroantral fistula and displaced roots
AbstractThere is a weak evidence base on which to define the most appropriate radiographic technique to evaluate dental tissues that may impact on the maxillary sinus, including the risk assessment for oroantral communications, identification and removal of displaced roots, timing and optimal management of oroantral fistula, in the presence of odontogenic sinusitis. There is no demonstrable benefit from the routine use of CBCT in exodontia. However, cross-sectional imaging is strongly recommended over 2-dimensional radiographic techniques when identifying displaced roots of teeth, and during surgical management of oroantral...

Oral carcinoma cuniculatum, the great mimicker: Report of a challenging case and literature review
In conclusion, the wide variety of clinical presentations, lack of cytological atypia in most cases, and need for deep incisional biopsies make the diagnosis of OCC challenging. Radical surgery is the main therapeutic modality and local recurrence after initial treatment occurs in less than 20% of cases. Although locally aggressive, regional and distant metastases are rare and the prognosis is good. (Source: Oral Surgery)

Do children get dry socket? —The incidence and pattern of presentation of alveolar osteitis in children and adolescents following dental extractions
ConclusionsDespite the belief that AO rarely manifests in children, the incidence of paediatric AO in this study is in line with that of AO found in the adult literature. The literature is inconsistent and conflicting regarding current understanding of AO. As far as possible, an atraumatic approach to exodontia should be adopted. We have proposed four underlying concepts which may benefit from future research given the paucity of research exclusively into dry socket in children and adolescents. (Source: Oral Surgery)
