An incidental radiolucent lesion involving the angle of the mandible
A 58-year-old white female was referred to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon for evaluation of a soft tissue lesion on the left lower lip with a clinical impression of mucocele. At the time of the appointment, the lesion had significantly decreased in size. The clinical diagnosis of a resolving mucocele was established and the patient decided to monitor the lesion. Extra-oral and intra-oral examination failed to reveal any significant asymmetry or mass effect besides the referred area on the lower lip. Review of the studies on the relationship and treatment of anterior disk displacement and dentofacial deformity in adolescents
Anterior disk displacement (ADD) is a common type of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement. In adolescents, the relationship between ADD and dentofacial deformities are brought into focus. Whether treatment is needed, or what kind of treatment are effective are still without a consensus. From the literature review, the consequences of ADD without treatment and the effect on disk repositioning were summarized. The results showed that after ADD, condylar height was prone to reduce that may lead to or aggravate dentofacial deformities in adolescents. Novel mutations in GJA1 in two Brazilian families with oculodentodigital dysplasia
Oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD; MIM #164200), a rare genetic disorder characterized by abnormal craniofacial, dental, ocular, and digital features, is caused by mutations in GJA1 (gap junction alpha-1) gene and inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. However, an autosomal recessive pattern is also reported. Here we described 2 families with members affected by ODDD. In the first family, the c.752G>C (p.S251T) and c.848C>T (p.P283L) heterozygous missense mutations and the c.825C>T (p.T275T) silent mutation were identified in the proband, that showed mild ODDD phenotypes, and in his mother, that displayed hemolytic an...
