Association of hyperparathyroidism and benign fibro-osseous jaw tumors: a 25-year retrospective study at Mayo Clinic
ConclusionPatients with benign jaw tumors including FD, OF, and GCG may have increased risk of PHPT compared to the general population. Surgeons treating these benign tumors need to be cognizant of these findings, obtain appropriate laboratory studies, and incorporate multidisciplinary care including endocrinologists, endocrine surgeons, and maxillofacial surgeons. Perforating dental implants and maxillary sinus pathology
ConclusionsA first large study on the association between maxillary dental implant and sinus pathology. Dental implant perforation is associated with sinus opacification. Considering dental implant diameter, rather than vertical depth of penetration into the sinus, as an important criterion when examining perforated dental implants necessitates a new approach to clinical decision-making. Radiographic texture analysis of the hard tissue changes following socket preservation with allograft and xenograft materials for dental implantation: a randomized clinical trial
ConclusionTA can be used for the quantification of radiographic changes of bone following socket preservation and potentially accelerate the process of decision-making for dental implant treatment. (Source: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Clockwise versus counterclockwise rotation in bimaxillary surgery: 3D analysis of facial soft tissue outcomes
ConclusionClockwise rotation of the bimaxillary complex demonstrated a significant advantage in reducing chin volume and intergonial width compared to counterclockwise rotation, leading to a reduced frontal lower face width among Asian Class III subjects. (Source: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Management of pseudoaneurysms of the internal maxillary artery derived from orthognathic surgery based on one case
ConclusionPseudoaneurysms derived from external carotid artery branches must be suspected when patients show multiple episodes of bleeding (epistaxis or through the surgical approach) within the first two weeks after orthognathic surgery. If so, vascular CT or angiography should be performed to rule out the presence of vascular injuries. In case a pseudoaneurysm is identified, vascular embolization with N-butyl-cyanoacrylate seems to be the best treatment if available. If this treatment is not available or bleeding cannot be controlled, surgical ligature of the injured vessel is a valid treatment. (Source: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

The effect of local injection of bupivacaine with and without fentanyl at the operative site in mandibular open reduction on acute pain intensity and opioid requirement: a randomized clinical trial
ConclusionThe addition of fentanyl to bupivacaine for supraperiosteal injection in the open reduction surgery site reduces post-operative pain in the first 24 h and reduces the need for opioids without causing complications such as nausea and vomiting. (Source: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

CT-assessed sarcopenia and prognostic nutritional index are associated with poor prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionCT-SP was associated with a significant decrease in survival rate in patients with OSCC. Furthermore, CT-SP was correlated with the PNI. (Source: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Comparison of histologic and radiographic changes of sockets grafted with LPRF and sockets without intervention after tooth extraction
ConclusionThe LPRF neither reduces the rate of ridge resorption in vertical or horizontal dimensions of extraction sockets nor induces more new bone formation.Clinical relevanceThis study helps dentists choose the appropriate material for ridge preservation. (Source: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Anatomical research of the clavicular pedicled flap for mandibular reconstruction: vascularization and harvesting technique
ConclusionThe osteoperiosteal vasculature of the clavicular flap is based on the transverse cervical artery which receives a reverse blood supply from the ascending cervical artery. This vascular pattern is reliable because of the existence of the sub-occipital microvascular network named the “Bosniak node.” This pedicled clavicular flap seems to be a robust perspective in both mandibular and facial bone reconstruction. We do not claim that it will replace the existing approaches, but it will expand the surgical panel of mandibular reconstruction. Its clinical realisation will judge its functionality. Radioresistance or/and radiosensitivity of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: biological angle
ConclusionsBrachytherapy or/and external-beam radiotherapy are crucial for treating HNSCC especially the early stage patients, but in some patients with locally advanced tumors, their outcome with radiation therapy is poor due to obvious radioresistance. The curative effects mainly depend on the response to radiation therapy so an updated review is needed to optimize further applications in HNSCC radiotherapy. (Source: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)
