Choroidal Nevi in the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Disease Study
Choroidal nevus is a common intraocular tumor. Although choroidal nevus is usually a benign lesion, it has been associated with increased risk of developing uveal melanoma, and when located in the subfoveal region, it may affect vision. Only a few population-based studies have examined choroidal nevi on the basis of retinal photographs using standardized protocols. Such epidemiologic data are even more limited in Asia, with prevalence rates reported to widely range from 0.15% to 2.9% among different Asian populations. (Source: Ophthalmology)

Genetic Background of Iris Melanomas and Iris Melanocytic Tumors of Uncertain Malignant Potential
Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. Iris melanoma comprises 4% to 10% of all UMs and has a lower mortality rate. The genetic changes in iris melanoma are not as well characterized as ciliary body or choroidal melanoma. The aim of this study was to gain more insight into the genetic background of iris melanoma and iris nevi. (Source: Ophthalmology)

Re: Economides et  al.: Capturing the moment of fusion loss in intermittent exotropia (Ophthalmology. 2017;124;496-504)
Based on the eye tracker recording data presented, I can agree with the conclusion on page 503 in the discussion section that states “once the ocular axes separate, visual feedback has no impact on the subsequent outward movement of the deviating eye to its final position.”1 However, the abstract conclusion implies something different, stating that the process of fusion loss itself in patients with intermittent exotropia is n ot influenced by visual feedback. Semantics perhaps, but as a clinician who has examined 20 or 30 of these patients weekly for the past 17 years, how else to explain the consistently reported symp...

Re: Schlenker et  al.: Efficacy, safety, and risk factors for failure of standalone ab interno gelatin microstent implantation versus standalone trabeculectomy (Ophthalmology. 2017;124:1579-1588)
The article by Schlenker et  al1 retrospectively compares the outcomes of an ab interno gelatin stent to stand alone trabeculectomy in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with uncontrolled open angle glaucoma. The article concludes that both procedures demonstrate equal efficacy and risk of failure. “Both proced ures had a 75% survival at approximately 10 months for complete success at an IOP ≤21 mmHg.” In terms of trabeculectomy success rates in this study these data seem to be suboptimal in comparison with recent trabeculectomy outcome data from the UK,2 where Kirwan et al demonstrated a 90% survival ...

We thank Masood et  al for their correspondence and interest in our manuscript, and for sharing their results to date. More data are needed on this new microstent, especially comparative studies (ideally prospective and randomized) against trabeculectomy and other filtering surgeries. (Source: Ophthalmology)
