Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, Charles Parker, The Big Hewer, 1967
This radio ballad about British coal miners was first broadcast by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in 1961; the picture depicts the album cover of the first vinyl pressing by Argo Records in 1967. The Big Hewer was devised and curated by folk musicians and activists Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, and by BBC radio producer Charles Parker, using oral testimony from miners of the Durham, Northumberland, Glamorgan and Nottinghamshire coalfields. Radio ballads were a new form and a milestone in radio broadcast, in which the narrative comprised the actual words of participants from many hours of field recording, const...

Mixed occupational and iatrogenic allergic contact dermatitis in a hairdresser
We present a case of mixed occupational, non-occupational and iatrogenic ACD in a hairdresser which illustrates that delayed diagnosis can result in high morbidity, and unnecessary treatment and cost. A hairdresser with chronic hand and facial eczema failed medical management with topical steroids and dupilumab. Patch testing revealed contact allergy to multiple occupational exposures, home exposures and topical medicaments. (Source: Occupational Medicine)

COVID-19, the heart and returning to physical exercise
During the COVID-19 pandemic, employers and occupational health (OH) practitioners have worked together to manage the risk of employees developing COVID-19 illness as part of return-to-work considerations [1,2]. The focus of activity for many OH practitioners has centred on the complex issue of assessing the risk of employees developing severe COVID-19 illness through judging their likely clinical vulnerability, aided by COVID-19 clinical risk assessment tools, such as that proposed by Coggon and co-workers [3]. Employers must consider other factors as part of the wider risk assessment for acquiring SARS-CoV-2 virus, such ...

Influence of organizational stress on reported depressive symptoms among police
ConclusionsOrganizational stress may uniquely contribute to OSI and depressive symptoms and should be examined in future research. Findings support prior literature suggesting that initiatives to treat OSI among police should address workplace environment and organizational stressors. Addressing organizational issues in police culture and developing long-lasting initiatives is key in the future of OSI prevention and treatment for police officers. (Source: Occupational Medicine)

Peer review audit of non-specialist occupational physician reports
ConclusionsOur findings demonstrate a high standard of OH report quality in this sample of non-specialist OPs that is consistent across all key OH report components. Potential development areas are also identified that can inform education/training tailored to this physician group and assist in competency standard-setting. (Source: Occupational Medicine)

Meta-analysis of nursing-related organizational and psychosocial predictors of sickness absence
ConclusionsWe synthesized three decades of research where several factors influenced sickness absence. Due to limited recent research, the results should be interpreted with caution as some practices may have changed overtime or between countries. Nevertheless, these findings could help in applying preventative strategies to mitigate lost-time in a vulnerable working population. (Source: Occupational Medicine)

Studying smoking benefit in farmer ’s lung to understand Covid-19
It was observed, first in China, and then in France, that the proportion of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) patients was significantly lower in active smokers compared to the proportion of active smokers in the general population. The protection conferred by smoking for a respiratory disease has so far only been described for hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), especially for farmer ’s lung, and to a lesser degree, for bird fancier’s lung. We compared the similarities and differences between farmer’s lung and SARS-CoV-2 and the relationship between smoking and SARS-CoV-2 and farmer’s lun...

Musculoskeletal pain among Finnish orchestra musicians versus core workforce
ConclusionsProfessional orchestra musicians reported more pain in the back and upper extremity than other working people. Future research should focus on explaining differences in the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders between musicians and the general population. (Source: Occupational Medicine)

Assessment of workers ’ personal vulnerability to covid-19 using ‘covid-age’
As countries adapt to the longer-term challenges of Covid-19, occupational health professionals increasingly are being asked to advise on the fitness for work of patients who might be unusually vulnerable to the disease because of their age, ethnicity and/or comorbidities. The risk of contracting Covid-19 through work will depend on its prevalence in the local community; the extent to which the job entails either close proximity to people who could be carrying the infection or contact with material that might be contaminated by the virus; the effectiveness of any measures to reduce transmission (such as barriers or persona...

Occupational health physicians as users of electronic health records
ConclusionsThis study showed that the usability problems of EHRs were the slowness, unexpected downtimes and difficulties in obtaining patient data. Also, respondents felt very often a lack of time in their work. OH physicians ’ work is best supported by EHRs that consider their specific role in healthcare, i.e. the assessment of work ability, the co-ordination of care and rehabilitation and support for return to work. Occupational low-dose irradiation and cancer risk among medical radiation workers
ConclusionsExcess risk of cancer is suspected for high and former exposures. The more highly exposed professions, i.e. interventional physicians and nuclear medicine workers, should be monitored carefully. Collaborative projects aiming to increase the quantity and quality of information of the studied populations would be a key point (Source: Occupational Medicine)
