Male and female sterilisation
are important forms of contraception worldwide despite declining popularity in developed countries and limited access during the Covid-19 global pandemic. Vasectomy is the only highly reliable form of male contraception. Appropriate counselling about permanent methods of contraception in both sexes is vital and should include information about irreversibility, failure rates and complications. The alternatives to sterilisation, particularly long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), should be discussed in detail as they are at least as effective and have the advantage of reversibility. The pathophysiology and management of menopausal symptoms
The menopause is a significant event in a women's life that can potentially impact on her quality of life in several ways. It marks the end of the reproductive life cycle and the clinical manifestations of the menopause result from the eventual exhaustion of oocytes within the ovaries. The depletion of these oocytes results in chronic hypoestrogenic state, which in the short term can cause menopausal symptoms and over a longer period, may impact upon bone and cardiovascular health. This review summarises current understanding of pathophysiology of the symptoms of the menopause as well as reviewing the current recommendatio...

Induction of labour
describes the artificial stimulation of the onset of labour and occurs in up to 30% of pregnancies in the United Kingdom. Both mechanical and pharmacological methods of induction of labour exist. Induction of labour is associated with less maternal satisfaction compared with spontaneous vaginal delivery. Therefore, the decision for induction of labour should not be undertaken lightly and appropriate counselling of the mother with appropriate documentation of the provision of information in addition to the indications, risks, benefits and alternatives to induction of labour is advocated. Benign inflammatory vulval dermatoses: diagnostic approach and management strategies
Vulval dermatoses present with distressing symptoms, alongside sensitive psychological and psychosexual issues. There is an incorrect belief amongst a subset of patients and also clinicians that most genital symptoms result from infections. The diagnosis and management of skin diseases is broadly applicable to genital disorders as well. Normal anatomical variants can often be confused with pathological changes and clinical findings may be subtle. Thus, it is vital to examine patients early, to recognize salient features of common dermatoses and avoid empirical treatments based on symptoms alone. (Source: Obstetrics, Gynaec...

Caesarean section: techniques and complications
Caesarean sections are being increasingly performed in the UK, now around one in four deliveries, and are the most frequent procedures performed by obstetric and gynaecology trainees. There are variations in technique between surgeons but there is overall guidance outlined by National Institute for Clinical Excellence. There are known complications of this procedure, as with any major surgery, which should be discussed with patients. Surgeons should be aware of these potential complications and how to approach them if they occur. (Source: Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine)

Suspected fetal anomalies: an overview for general obstetricians and gynaecologists
Advances in fetal ultrasonographic assessment have led to improvements in the antenatal diagnosis of many structural anomalies. Approximately 60% of congenital fetal defects can be diagnosed during the 20 week anomaly scan. Some of them are so severe that the option of termination of pregnancy should be discussed. Some, can be successfully managed in utero, or postnatally. Most pregnancies affected by congenital fetal anomalies are cared for by a specialist team of fetal medicine doctors and midwives, with contributions from clinical geneticists, neonatologists and specialist paediatricians and paediatric surgeons. Principles of controlled ovarian stimulation for assisted reproduction
This article provides an overview of the ovarian stimulation protocols used in assisted reproductive techniques (ART). Individual approach to ovarian stimulation involves routine measurements of ovarian reserve (OR) prior to in  vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. It helps to identify patients at risk of poor and hyper-response to gonadotrophins. The latter is associated with potentially serious complication of ovarian stimulation, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Over the years, different methods have been implemen ted to reduce the risk of developing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in predicted hyper-responders....
