Disordered eating behaviors in pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease in remission or mild-moderate disease activity
CONCLUSION: Pediatric patients with IBD are at risk for disordered eating, with a prevalence of 6% in our population, which is twice the prevalence of disordered eating in the general population. The EAT-26 questionnaire is a feasible tool to screen pediatric IBD patients for disordered eating.PMID:38326229 | DOI:10.1002/ncp.11131 (Source: Nutrition in Clinical Practice)

Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria in older adults who are institutionalized: Agreement with the Subjective Global Assessment and its impact on 5-year mortality
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of malnutrition varied according to the assessment tools. Malnutrition diagnosed by the SGA, but not by the GLIM criteria or MNA-FF, was associated with 5-year mortality in older adults who were institutionalized.PMID:38316566 | DOI:10.1002/ncp.11120 (Source: Nutrition in Clinical Practice)

Single-food elimination of cow's milk as a treatment for eosinophilic esophagitis in children aged 2-18 years: A review of the literature
Nutr Clin Pract. 2024 Jan 30. doi: 10.1002/ncp.11117. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCow's milk elimination (CME) is an established treatment, similar to other forms of diet therapy, for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). However, there is limited research to support its efficacy as a primary treatment. This review evaluated studies published in the past 10 years that assessed the outcomes after CME on histologic remission, clinical findings, and quality of life (QoL) in children aged 2-18 years with EoE. The evidence demonstrated that CME was effective at achieving histologic remission of disease in 50%-65% of children. This ...

A longitudinal study to determine if all critically ill patients should be considered at nutrition risk or is there a highly accurate screening tool to be adopted?
CONCLUSION: No nutrition risk screening tool demonstrated a satisfactory concurrent validity; only the MUST and MST predicted ICU mortality and the NRS-2002 ≥5 and mNUTRIC predicted prolonged ICU stay, suggesting that it could be appropriate to adopt the ESPEN recommendation to assess nutrition status in patients with ≥48 h in the ICU.PMID:38282189 | DOI:10.1002/ncp.11118 (Source: Nutrition in Clinical Practice)

Intestinal failure-associated liver disease: Current challenges in screening, diagnosis, and parenteral nutrition considerations
Nutr Clin Pract. 2024 Jan 21. doi: 10.1002/ncp.11116. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) is a serious life-limiting complication that can occur throughout the clinical course of intestinal failure and its management by parenteral nutrition (PN). Despite this, there is a lack of a standardized definition for IFALD, which makes this insidious condition increasingly difficult to screen and diagnose in clinical practice. Attenuating the progression of liver disease before the onset of liver failure is key to improving morbidity and mortality in these patients. This requires timely...

Nutrition challenges following total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation
Nutr Clin Pract. 2024 Feb;39(1):86-99. doi: 10.1002/ncp.11106.ABSTRACTTotal pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) is a surgical treatment option for patients with chronic pancreatitis who have not responded to other therapies. TP offers pain relief whereas IAT preserves beta cell mass to reduce endocrine insufficiency. During the surgical procedure, the entire pancreas is removed. Islet cells from the pancreas are then isolated, purified, and infused into the liver via the portal vein. Successful TPIAT relieves pain for a majority of patients but is not without obstacles, specifically gastrointestinal, exoc...

Evaluation of different screening tools as the first step of the GLIM framework: A cross-sectional study of Chinese cancer patients in an outpatient setting
CONCLUSION: Using PG-SGA as the standard, the GLIM framework using PG-SGA SF as the screening tool has good accordance with the PG-SGA regardless of severity grading. PG-SGA SF can be used as a valid screening tool in the GLIM framework.PMID:38161144 | DOI:10.1002/ncp.11103 (Source: Nutrition in Clinical Practice)
