Gestational Age-Related Urinary Peptidome Changes in Preterm and Term Born Infants
CONCLUSION: This is the first study reporting GA-related urinary peptidome changes of preterm infants detected by CE-MS and a modulation of the peptidome with GA. Further research is required to locate peptidome clusters correlated with specific clinical complications and long-term outcome. This may identify preterm infants at higher risk for adverse outcome who would benefit from early intervention.PMID:38382482 | DOI:10.1159/000535355 (Source: Neonatology)

Close Collaboration with Parents Affects the Length of Stay and Growth in Preterm Infants: A Register-Based Study in Finland
CONCLUSION: The unit-wide intervention improving family-centred care practices in NICUs may lead to more efficient use of hospital resources by shortening the LOS, improving growth, and decreasing hospital visits of preterm infants.PMID:38354726 | DOI:10.1159/000535517 (Source: Neonatology)

Early Brain Activity in Very Preterm Infants of Mothers with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilot Study
CONCLUSION: We found normal maturation of brain activity in the first 4 weeks after birth in very preterm infants born to mothers with GDM, not differing from a very preterm control group. The higher number of sleep-wake cycles per hour in GDM-exposed infants could indicate transiently enhanced maturation. Further studies on brain activity and brain development in very preterm infants of mothers with GDM are needed to validate our results.PMID:38346405 | DOI:10.1159/000536182 (Source: Neonatology)

Association between Antenatal Antibiotic Exposure and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: A Systematic Review and Bayesian Model-Averaged Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The currently available evidence suggests a lack of association between antenatal antibiotics and BPD. However, our results should not be interpreted as an argument for widespread use of antibiotics in the setting of preterm delivery.PMID:38310865 | DOI:10.1159/000536220 (Source: Neonatology)

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Maternal Vaccination in Infants below 6 Months of Age: Meta-Analysis of Safety, Immunogenicity, and Efficacy
CONCLUSIONS: Not only does antenatal RSV vaccination look safe and immunogenic in vaccinated mothers, but it also reliably provides effective antibody levels in infants and diminishes RSV-related severe disease in infants under 6 months of age.PMID:38286126 | DOI:10.1159/000536031 (Source: Neonatology)

Association of Neonatal Antibiotic Exposure with Long-Term Growth Trajectory Faltering in Preterm-Birth Children
CONCLUSIONS: Growth increments were negatively associated with antibiotic exposure duration in preterm neonates implicating that antibiotic stewardship and growth follow-up for preterm neonates are thus warranted.PMID:38286129 | DOI:10.1159/000535946 (Source: Neonatology)

Pancreatic Insufficiency, Digestive Enzyme Supplementation, and Postnatal Growth in Preterm Babies
Neonatology. 2024 Jan 19:1-5. doi: 10.1159/000535964. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Optimising postnatal growth facilitates better long-term neonatal neurodevelopmental outcomes. Early postnatal growth is often hindered by a variety of factors unique to the extrauterine environment and digestive immaturity both contributing to reduced enteral feed tolerance during the first few days and weeks after birth. Preterm infants display varying levels of pancreatic insufficiency that are related to gestational age and providing digestive enzyme supplementation, may be one way in which to improve postnatal growth in ent...
