Withaperuvin O, a new withanolide from < em > Physalis peruviana < /em > L
In this study, a new withanolide named withaperuvin O (1) and seven known ones, including physalolactone B-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), withanolide J (3), physapruin A (4), physaperuvin G (5), withaperuvin (6), withaperuvin C (7) and 28-hydroxywithaperuvin C (8), were isolated from the whole plants of P. peruviana. Their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analyses including NMR and HR-ESI-MS. The bioactivities of these compounds against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced NO production in RAW264.7 cells and cytotoxicity against HepG2 were tested. Compound 3 showed strong anti-inflammatory activities ...

Effects of trigonelline, diosgenin, and < em > Cistanche deserticola < /em > polysaccharide on the culture of female germline stem cells < em > in vitro < /em >
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Mar 1:1-8. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2319661. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFemale germline stem cells (FGSCs) are renewable sources of oocytes that play an indispensable role in re-establishing mammal fertility. Here, we have established FGSCs from neonatal mice, which exhibit characteristics of germline stem cells. We show that compared with monomeric trigonelline and diosgenin, macromolecular compounds Cistanche deserticola polysaccharides (CDPs) in Chinese herbal medicine can enhance the ability of FGSCs to differentiate into oocytes at appropriate concentrations while maintaining self-renewal in vi...

Production, physico-chemical properties and antioxidant activity of melanin from < em > Annulohypoxylon stygium < /em > (L év.) Y.M. Ju, J.D. Rogers and H.M. Hsieh
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Feb 29:1-10. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2320741. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo obtain higher melanin production in liquid culture, culture conditions of Annulohypoxylon stygium (Lév.) Y.M. Ju, J.D. Rogers and H.M. Hsieh were optimised. The results showed that using single factor experiment and orthogonal test, the optimised production of melanin reached 2.20 g/L, which was 2.06 times higher than that of the control group. In addition, it was speculated that A. stygium melanin (AsM) was 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) melanin and showed an amorphous irregular structure. Moreover, it had good solubil...

If speed is of the essence: rapid analysis of ambergris by APCI compact mass spectrometry
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Feb 28:1-7. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2321496. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) compact mass spectrometry (CMS) was investigated for the analysis of jetsam and museum-archived ambergris and of ambergris components in perfumes. The data were compared with those from existing methods. Authentic samples of some individual ambergris constituents (ambrein, coprostanol, epicoprostanol and coprostanone), were also examined. Rapid APCI CMS was achieved using either a solids probe or a probe with solutions held in capillary melting point tubes. Interpretati...

Nat Prod Res. 2024 Feb 28:1-6. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2324106. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEuphorhypenoids A (1) and B (2), two new dammarane-type triterpenoids, along with four known tetracyclic triterpenoids (3-6), were isolated from the whole plant of Euphorbia hypericifolia. The structures of new compounds were mainly elucidated by a series of extensive spectroscopic methods, including HR-ESI-MS, NMR, IR, and UV. Compound 1 exhibited significant inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation at concentrations of 10 - 200 µM.PMID:38419300 | DOI:10.1080/14786419.2024.2324106 (Source: Natural Product Research)

Identification and < em > α < /em > -glucosidase inhibitory activity evaluation of two new coumarins derived from < em > Mansonia gagei < /em > J. R. Drumm
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Feb 29:1-6. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2324367. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFive coumarins were isolated from the heartwood of Mansonia gagei, which included two newly discovered compounds, namely 11-hydroxypopulene E (1) and mansorin D (2), along with three previously identified compounds. The structures were determined through the utilisation of comprehensive spectroscopic data, ECD calculations, and a thorough comparison with existing literature data. The α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of all isolated compounds were assessed in yeast. Out of the compounds tested, compound 2 exhibited the most ...

Phytochemical study of'< em > taiji' < /em > ( < em > Handroanthus impetiginosus < /em > (Mart.) Mattos) and < em > 'ka'a ovet ĩ' < /em > ( < em > Luehea divaricata < /em > Mart.) extracts
This study explores the phytochemical composition of leaf extracts from Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart.) Mattos and Luehea divaricata Mart., used in a contraceptive decoction by Mbya-Guarani women. The phytocompounds were identified by gas chro-matography-mass spectrometry, while Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, multi-elemental, and thermal analyses were used to characterise plant biomass. Notably, no phytoconstituent supporting the efficacy of these extracts as female contraceptives was found, except for a small amount (0.3%) of sitosterol. Conversely, L. divaricata leaves contained compounds like 1,3-dihydroxya...

Nat Prod Res. 2024 Feb 28:1-15. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2321484. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEssential oil (EO) composition of Smyrnium olusatrum was characterised by high proportion of furanosesquiterpenes (51.66-69.35%). The leaf methanolic extract composition was found to be rich with Quercetin-O-hexoside (39.78%). Apigenin 6,8-di-Chexoside represent the major component of flower (18.2%) and fruits (18.82%). Flower extract exhibited the highest contents of total phenolic (48.97 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (52.63 mg RE/g). The β-carotene and lycopene contents were in the order of 4.55-26.14 mg/100g, and 8.00-49.45 mg/1...
