Measuring person ‐centred care in nurse‐led outpatient rheumatology clinics
ConclusionWe found general support for the appropriateness of the PCCoc/rheum as an outcome measure of patient‐perceived PCC in nurse‐led outpatient rheumatology clinics. While in need of further testing, the 21‐item PCCoc/rheum has the potential to evaluate outpatient PCC from a patient perspective. (Source: Musculoskeletal Care)

Current physiotherapy practice in the management of tennis elbow: A service evaluation
ConclusionsWide variations in treatment approaches were identified. There was no consistency in the choice of modality used, the type of exercise or the dose of exercise prescribed. The use of passive modalities and corticosteroid injections was found to remain commonplace, despite a lack of supporting research evidence. There is a clear need for evidence‐based guidance for physiotherapists treating patients with tennis elbow. (Source: Musculoskeletal Care)

A 12 ‐h combined physical and psychological treatment programme for patients with persistent back pain
Abstract This service evaluation analysed the long‐term clinical outcomes, as measured by the Pain Self‐Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), of a 12‐h group‐based, multidisciplinary, combined physical and psychological treatment programme for patients with persistent back pain in a secondary care setting. Between April 2012 and December 2015, 373 patients attended the programme, with outcome measures obtained for 272 patients post‐treatment. We randomly selected 120 patients who had completed treatment, for long‐term outcome measurement follow‐up, and gained outcome measures for ...

Person ‐centred care in nurse‐led outpatient rheumatology clinics: Conceptualization and initial development of a measurement instrument
ConclusionsA conceptual outpatient PCC framework and a 24‐item questionnaire intended to measure PCC in nurse‐led outpatient rheumatology clinics were developed. The extent to which the questionnaire represents a measurement instrument remains to be tested. (Source: Musculoskeletal Care)

Experiences of a patient ‐initiated self‐monitoring service in inflammatory arthritis: A qualitative exploration
ConclusionsOverall, participants were positive about the new service, in comparison with usual care, valuing its tailored approach and empowering effects. Further work is needed to ensure adherence to the service protocol and address anxieties around self‐monitoring prior to any widespread implementation of the service. (Source: Musculoskeletal Care)

From “Non‐encounters” to autonomic agency. Conceptions of patients with low back pain about their encounters in the health care system
Abstract Low back pain is a considerable health problem which affects people around the world, causing major healthcare costs. The use of qualitative research methods enables us to describe and understand patients’ experience of, and attitudes to, healthcare. The aim of the present phenomenographic study was to identify and describe the contextual nature of the conceptions of patients with low back pain of their encounters in the HCS. Seventeen patients with chronic or episodic low back pain classified as “high risk” were interviewed in open recall interviews, using videos of patients’ initial physiotherapy session...

Women's situation ‐specific strategies in managing participation restrictions due to early rheumatoid arthritis: A gender comparison
ConclusionsWomen and men used four types of situation‐specific strategies in managing RA; adjustment, avoidance, interaction and acceptance. These situation‐specific strategies provide useful knowledge, in terms of multidisciplinary rehabilitation and for patients' significant others. (Source: Musculoskeletal Care)

Barriers and reinforcing factors to self ‐management behaviour in rheumatoid arthritis patients: A qualitative study
ConclusionBehavioural and environmental barriers, as well as social support and outcomes of SMB were the most important barriers and reinforcing factors of SMB. Therefore, considering these factors in patients may help in designing programmes that attempt to reduce barriers and increase reinforcing factors, which ultimately result in higher levels of SMB and quality of life among patients.
