The UraA and RutG transporters of Escherichia coli are members of the ubiquitous Nucleobase ‐Cation Symporter‐2 (NCS2) family. Structure and function comparisons identify protein sequence differences that determine selectivity. Replacement of Phe73 with Ala in the UraA uracil‐specific permease allows binding of thymine with an affinity that is comparable to the broad‐specificity ur acil/thymine permease RutG. For details, see the article by Botou et al. on pp. 204–219 of this issue.

Rigid tube ‐contractile sheaths provide a mechanism for delivering proteins and DNA across the cell envelope. Evolutionarily related contractile injection systems include those of bacteriophage (illustrated her for the T4 tail), type VI secretion systems (T6SS), and tailocins such as the P. aeruginosa R‐ty pe pyocins. For details, see the MicroReview by Taylor et al. on pp. 6‐15 of this issue.
