Prevalence of Cardiometabolic Diseases Among Racial and Ethnic Subgroups in Adults - Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, United States, 2013-2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Jan 25;73(3):51-56. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7303a1.ABSTRACTAlthough diabetes and cardiovascular disease account for substantial disease prevalence among adults in the United States, their prevalence among racial and ethnic subgroups is inadequately characterized. To fill this gap, CDC described the prevalence of diagnosed cardiometabolic diseases among U.S. adults, by disaggregated racial and ethnic subgroups, among 3,970,904 respondents to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System during 2013-2021. Prevalence of each disease (diabetes, myocardial infarction, angina or coronary heart disea...

Deaths of U.S. Citizens Undergoing Cosmetic Surgery - Dominican Republic, 2009-2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Jan 25;73(3):62-65. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7303a3.ABSTRACTAlthough infections resulting from cosmetic surgery performed outside the United States have been regularly reported, deaths have rarely been identified. During 2009-2022, 93 U.S. citizens died after receiving cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic. The number of deaths increased from a mean of 4.1 per year during 2009-2018 to a mean of 13.0 during 2019-2022 with a peak in of 17 in 2020. A subset of post-cosmetic surgery deaths occurring during peak years was investigated, and most deaths were found to be the result of embolic event...

Underuse of Antiviral Drugs to Prevent Progression to Severe COVID-19 - Veterans Health Administration, March-September 2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Jan 25;73(3):57-61. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7303a2.ABSTRACTAntiviral drugs reduce the rate of progression to severe COVID-19 when given to patients with mild-to-moderate disease within 5 days of symptom onset. Despite being recommended for patients at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19 because of age or chronic conditions, reported antiviral use among the general adult population has been ≤35%. To ascertain reasons for underuse of antiviral medications to prevent severe COVID-19 and propose interventions accordingly, a detailed review was conducted of 110 Veterans Health Administrat...

Prevalence of hepatitis C among pregnant women in an Appalachian population
J Viral Hepat. 2024 Jan 18. doi: 10.1111/jvh.13911. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe opioid crisis has adversely affected West Virginia's pregnant and infant populations. With high rates of opioid use disorder and neonatal abstinence syndrome, West Virginia has the highest rates of Hepatitis C (HCV) acute infection among pregnant women. To better understand how HCV impacts an already high-risk population, the study purpose was to (1) describe its prevalence among women receiving prenatal care at a single tertiary care clinic in Appalachia and compare with state and national rates, and (2) determine whether it is associate...

Mpox Outbreak - Los Angeles County, California, May 4-August 17, 2023
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Jan 18;73(2):44-48. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7302a4.ABSTRACTSince May 2022, approximately 2,500 mpox cases have been reported in Los Angeles County (LAC), California. Beginning in May 2023, the LAC Department of Public Health observed a consistent increase in mpox cases after a prolonged period of low incidence. A total of 56 cases were identified during May 4-August 17, 2023. A minority of mpox patients were fully vaccinated (29%). One patient was hospitalized; no deaths were reported. Two cases of reinfection occurred, both of which were associated with mild illness. The increasing number of c...

Cannabis Use Among Students in Grades 8, 10, and 12, by Sex - King County, Washington, 2008-2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Jan 18;73(2):27-31. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7302a1.ABSTRACTCannabis use during adolescence is associated with poor outcomes, including cognitive impairment, cannabis use disorder, and impaired driving. To guide prevention and use reduction strategies, Public Health - Seattle & King County described recent trends in cannabis use by sex among King County, Washington students in grades 8, 10, and 12 and examined trends in sex-based differences. Data collected during seven 2008-2021 survey periods by the Healthy Youth Survey (administered by the Washington State Department of Health) and restri...

Pseudomonas Infection Outbreak Associated with a Hotel Swimming Pool - Maine, March 2023
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Jan 18;73(2):32-36. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7302a2.ABSTRACTTreated recreational water venues (e.g., pools and hot tubs) located at hotels represent one third of sources of reported treated recreational water-associated outbreaks; when these outbreaks are caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, they predominantly occur during January-April. On March 8, 2023, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) initiated an investigation in response to reports of illness among persons who had used a swimming pool at hotel A during March 4-5. A questionnaire was distributed to guests who were...

Detecting Mpox Cases Through Wastewater Surveillance - United States, August 2022-May 2023
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Jan 18;73(2):37-43. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7302a3.ABSTRACTIn October 2022, CDC's National Wastewater Surveillance System began routine testing of U.S. wastewater for Monkeypox virus. Wastewater surveillance sensitivity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) for Monkeypox virus were evaluated by comparing wastewater detections (Monkeypox virus detected versus not detected) to numbers of persons with mpox in a county who were shedding virus. Case ascertainment was assumed to be complete, and persons with mpox were assumed to shed virus for 25 days after symptom ons...

------Topical Antifungal Prescribing for Medicare Part D Beneficiaries - United States, 2021
This study found that enough topical antifungal prescriptions were written for approximately one of every eight Medicare Part D beneficiaries in 2021, and 10% of antifungal prescribers prescribed nearly one half of these medications. In the setting of emerging antimicrobial resistance, these findings highlight the importance of expanding efforts to understand current prescribing practices while encouraging judicious prescribing by clinicians and providing patient education about proper use.PMID:38206854 | PMC:PMC10794060 | DOI:10.15585/mmwr.mm7301a1 (Source: MMWR Morb Mortal Wkl...)

Effectiveness of Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines in Preventing COVID-19-Related Thromboembolic Events Among Medicare Enrollees Aged ≥65 Years and Those with End Stage Renal Disease - United States, September 2022-March 2023
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Jan 11;73(1):16-23. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7301a4.ABSTRACTCOVID-19 has been associated with an increased risk for thromboembolic events, including ischemic stroke, venous thromboembolism, and myocardial infarction. Studies have reported lower rates of COVID-19-related thromboembolic events among persons who received the COVID-19 vaccine compared with persons who did not, but rigorous estimates of vaccine effectiveness (VE) in preventing COVID-19-related thromboembolic events are lacking. This analysis estimated the incremental benefit of receipt of a bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine after receiv...
