Prevalence of Self-Reported Hypertension and Antihypertensive Medication Use Among Adults - United States, 2017-2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Mar 7;73(9):191-198. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7309a1.ABSTRACTHypertension, or high blood pressure, is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. It increases with age and is highest among non-Hispanic Black or African American persons, men, persons aged ≥65 years, those of lower socioeconomic status, and those who live in the southern United States. Hypertension affects approximately one half of U.S. adults, and approximately one quarter of those persons have their blood pressure under control. Reducing population-level hypertension prevalence and improving control is a national priorit...

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Social Determinants of Health and Health-Related Social Needs Among Adults - Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, United States, 2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Mar 7;73(9):204-208. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7309a3.ABSTRACTSocial determinants of health (SDOH) are a broad array of social and contextual conditions where persons are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that influence their physical and mental wellbeing and quality of life. Using 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, this study assessed measures of adverse SDOH and health-related social needs (HRSN) among U.S. adult populations. Measures included life satisfaction, social and emotional support, social isolation or loneliness, employment stability, food stability/se...

Years of Potential Life Lost and Mean Age of Adults Experiencing Nontraumatic, Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrests - Chicago, 2014-2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Mar 7;73(9):199-203. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7309a2.ABSTRACTApproximately 1,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) are assessed by emergency medical services in the United States every day, and approximately 90% of patients do not survive, leading to substantial years of potential life lost (YPLL). Chicago emergency medical services data were used to assess changes in mean age and YPLL from nontraumatic OHCA in adults in biennial cycles during 2014-2021. Among 21,070 reported nontraumatic OHCAs during 2014-2021, approximately 60% occurred among men and 57% among non-Hispanic Black or Afric...

Progress Toward Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome Elimination - Worldwide, 2012-2022
This report updates a previous report and describes progress toward rubella and CRS elimination during 2012-2022. During 2012-2022, among 194 WHO countries, the number that included rubella-containing vaccine (RCV) in their immunization schedules increased from 132 (68%) to 175 (90%) and the percentage of the world's infants vaccinated against rubella increased from 40% to 68%. Reported rubella cases declined 81%, from 93,816 in 2012 to 17,407 in 2022. Verification of rubella elimination was achieved in 98 (51%) of 194 countries by 2022, an increase from 84 (43%) countries in 2019. Despite significant progress in the intro...

Deaths from Excessive Alcohol Use - United States, 2016-2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Feb 29;73(8):154-161. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7308a1.ABSTRACTDeaths from causes fully attributable to alcohol use have increased during the past 2 decades in the United States, particularly from 2019 to 2020, concurrent with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, previous studies of trends have not assessed underlying causes of deaths that are partially attributable to alcohol use, such as injuries or certain types of cancer. CDC's Alcohol-Related Disease Impact application was used to estimate the average annual number and age-standardized rate of deaths from excessive alcohol use in the...

Interim Estimates of 2023-24 Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness - United States
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Feb 29;73(8):168-174. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7308a3.ABSTRACTIn the United States, annual influenza vaccination is recommended for all persons aged ≥6 months. Using data from four vaccine effectiveness (VE) networks during the 2023-24 influenza season, interim influenza VE was estimated among patients aged ≥6 months with acute respiratory illness-associated medical encounters using a test-negative case-control study design. Among children and adolescents aged 6 months-17 years, VE against influenza-associated outpatient visits ranged from 59% to 67% and against influenza-associated hospital...

Interim Effectiveness of Updated 2023-2024 (Monovalent XBB.1.5) COVID-19 Vaccines Against COVID-19-Associated Emergency Department and Urgent Care Encounters and Hospitalization Among Immunocompetent Adults Aged ≥18 Years - VISION and IVY Networks, September 2023-January 2024
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Feb 29;73(8):180-188. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7308a5.ABSTRACTIn September 2023, CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended updated 2023-2024 (monovalent XBB.1.5) COVID-19 vaccination for all persons aged ≥6 months to prevent COVID-19, including severe disease. However, few estimates of updated vaccine effectiveness (VE) against medically attended illness are available. This analysis evaluated VE of an updated COVID-19 vaccine dose against COVID-19-associated emergency department (ED) or urgent care (UC) encounters and hospitalization among immunocompetent adults aged ≥18...

MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Feb 29;73(8):175-179. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7308a4.ABSTRACTSurveillance data can provide rapid, within-season influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) estimates to guide public health recommendations. Mandatory reporting of influenza vaccine administration to California's immunization information registry began January 1, 2023, and mandatory reporting of all influenza laboratory test results, including negative results, was instituted in California on June 15, 2023. These data, collected by the California Department of Public Health during October 1, 2023-January 31, 2024, were used to calculate ...
