TNF- α effect on human delivery onset by CB1/TRPV1 crosstalk: new insights into endocannabinoid molecular signaling in preterm vs. term labor. Analysis of the EC/EV pathway and predictive biomarkers for early diagnosis of preterm delivery.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlighted the emergent pivotal role of the EC/EV system and inflammation in spontaneous term delivery and provided the framework for future studies that investigate the CB1/TRPV1 crosstalk in preterm birth. Particularly, we found a link between the stimulation of CB1 receptors and the antagonism of TRPV1 channels, that could be used in PTB prevention, through selected molecules. Optimizing high risk HPV-based primary screening for cervical cancer in low- and middle-income countries: opportunities and challenges.
Authors: Pimple SA, Mishra GA Abstract Disparities in the incidence and mortality due to cervical cancer between developed and developing countries continue to persist due to suboptimal health care systems in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs) that are unable to implement organized programs for screening which lack the technical, infrastructure and financial resources for adequate coverage and access to quality assured cervical cancer screening services that further reduce their effectiveness. The challenges in introducing quality cytology screening in LMICs led to the evaluation of alternative screen...

Contraception with the new intrauterine systems: a winning choice if shared!
Authors: di Spiezio Sardo A, Mastantuoni E, De Angelis MC, Zizolfi B Abstract Today the rate of unexpected pregnancy is still unacceptably high; long-acting reversible contraceptives, (LARC) seem to be an effective and modern solution. Intrauterine contraception (IUC) is the main exponent of the LARC and it is living a new exponential spread in the last years. Today IUC is the most widely used reversible contraceptive method and it is recommended by the major scientific gynecological societies. This review of the literature aims to retrace the history of intrauterine contraception and to focus attention on...

Postpartum hemorrhage: not only hypertensive disorders in oocyte donation pregnancies.
CONCLUSIONS: Most women who undergo MAP-E are in advanced age, representing a high-risk population for obstetric complications, like HPD and PPH, which stands as the main worldwide cause of maternal mortality. PMID: 31274261 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Minerva Ginecologica)

Circulating visfatin levels in the second and third trimester of pregnancies with gestational diabetes: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: No significant difference in circulating visfatin levels in GDM during the second trimester of pregnancy (WMD -0.30 ng/mL, 95% CI: -2.06, 1.45, SE=0.895, P=0.733) was detected. Meta-analysis of the studies in the third trimester revealed a significant negative effect, that was however driven by only one study. This finding limits the meaningful interpretation of the pooled analysis. Significant heterogeneity was identified between studies, and meta-regression analysis showed that homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance contributes significantly to heterogeneity. In conclusion, our findings suggest ...

Postoperative infections in women undergoing hysterectomy for benign indications: a cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Infectious complications after hysterectomy are uncommon, accounting for 8.5% of cases. Multivariable analysis showed that demographic and operative variables were more likely to serve as independent predictors of development of infection than hysterectomy route. Combined systemic (fluconazole) and topical (metronidazole + clotrimazole) therapy for a new approach to the treatment and prophylaxis of recurrent candidiasis.
Authors: Genovese C, Cianci A, Corsello S, Ettore G, Mattana P, Tempera G Abstract Recurrent Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (RVVC) is an important pathological and infectious condition that can greatly impact a woman's health and quality of life. Clinical and epidemiological studies show that different types of therapies are able to eliminate the signs and symptoms of mycotic vaginitis in the acute phase, but so far none of these has proved able to significantly reduce the risk of long-term recurrence. In this review, based on the available literature and original data from a preliminary in vitro microbiological...

Fertility preservation in breast cancer patients.
Authors: Rodgers RJ Abstract Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. As long-term survival rates have improved, there has been a concurrent increase in quality of life considerations, of which fertility preservation is of utmost importance. A number of fertility preservation options are available to women diagnosed with breast cancer, including administration of a GnRH agonist during chemotherapy in an attempt to minimize ovarian damage, oocyte or embryo cryopreservation prior to the administration of chemotherapy, in vitro maturation of oocytes or ovarian tissue cryopreservation. The...

Criteria, phenotypes and prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome.
Authors: Belenkaia LV, Lazareva LM, Walker W, Lizneva DV, Suturina LV Abstract Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is known as one of the most frequent endocrine diseases in women worldwide. However, this term does not completely capture the diversity of clinical signs associated with this syndrome e.g., menstrual irregularity and clinical features of androgen excess, which are though commonplace in women with PCOS, they are not included under the definition of PCOS, limited to polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM). Utilizing the most globally accepted criterion used today in the diagnosis of PCOS, the autho...

Pertussis vaccination in pregnancy: how many pediatric hospitalizations could be prevented?
Authors: Mesini A, Moscatelli A, Castagnola E Abstract Pertussis is a severe disease in children, especially in neonates and it is preventable by vaccination during pregnancy. After the observation of a 2-month-old toddler who needed extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for severe RSV plus Bordetella pertussis infection, we performed a review of all cases of pertussis admitted at the Istituto Giannina Gaslini, Genoa, Italy, from 2012 to 2018. We retrieved 72 cases of admission for pertussis, 46% aging less than 3 months, 42% with at least one comorbidity. Two patients needed ICU admission. Pertussis vaccina...
