Obesity and GLP-1.
Authors: Perez-Montes De Oca A, Pellitero S, Puig-Domingo M Abstract Obesity is an important public health issue that has been on the rise over the last decades. It calls for effective prevention and treatment. Bariatric surgery is the most effective medical therapy for weight loss in morbid obesity but we are in need for less aggressive treatments. Glucagon-likepeptide-1 receptor agonists are a group of incretin based drugs that have proven to be productive for obesity treatment. Through activation of the GLP-1 receptor they not only have an important role stimulating insulin secretion after meals, but wi...

The southern European atlantic diet, a review.
Authors: Tejera-Pérez C, Sánchez-Bao A, Bellido-Guerrero D, Casanueva FF Abstract The Southern Europe Atlantic Diet (SEAD) is the traditional diet consumed in the northwestern region of the Iberian peninsula: Galicia (Spain) and North of Portugal. These regions have geographical, climatic and cultural characteristics that had led them to develop their own dietary pattern. This dietary pattern integrated into its environment is based on fresh, local and seasonal products intake. In this diet there is a high intake of fish, seafood, cereals, potatoes, legumes, fruits, dairy products and vegetables. Meat, p...

A close look at our cases with parathyroidectomy: 11 years of experience.
CONCLUSIONS: Parathyroid neoplasm with uncertain malignant potential defines cases with suspicious histopathological features of carcinoma but doesn't meet the criteria for parathyroid carcinoma. In our series, these cases are identified as atypical parathyroid adenoma. We present clinical and morphological features of our parathyroidectomy cases in an 11-year period and aim to raise concern about borderline cases in between adenoma and carcinoma. We think that such tumors, similar to the thyroid neoplasm classification, should be defined as parathyroid neoplasms with uncertain malignant potential and should be followed cl...

Normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism: an update.
Authors: Salcuni AS, Battista C, Pugliese F, Columbu C, Guarnieri V, Carnevale V, Scillitani A Abstract Normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (NPHPT) is diagnosed in the setting of elevated PTH concentrations with consistently normal albumin-adjusted and ionized serum calcium levels, in absence of secondary causes for elevated PTH concentrations. In order to confirm persistence of the hyperparathyroid state, PTH levels should be elevated on at least two occasions over a 3 to 6 months period. The prevalence of NPHPT depends on the population studied. Data from different studies are often not comparable;...

Codon bias analyses on thyroid carcinoma genes.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study that analyzed the codon bias in thyroid cancer genes based also on synonymous mutations. The study provided different hints that should be further investigated by wet-lab validation and that it could open new scenarios in the understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in thyroid cancer development based on codon bias. The relation between sociosexual orientation, muscle performance and disgust sensitivity. A preliminary correlational study.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher MP is associated with a greater tendency to have occasional relationships and multiple sexual partners, in both genders. MP-related self-esteem and perceived vulnerability may be involved in mating behaviors. We speculate that the sexual hormones might mediate the relationship among these variables. Future studies are warranted to explore this hypothesis. PMID: 33103873 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Endocrinologica)

The clonal origin of multifocal papillary thyroid cancer (MPTC): intrathyroid spread or independent tumors?
In conclusion, data available in the literature indicated that multifocal papillary thyroid cancer may derived from both intraglandular spread and independent tumor foci. The understanding of the clonal origin of multifocal papillary thyroid tumors might represent an important issue in patient treatment. Familial non-medullary thyroid carcinoma: clinico-pathological features, current knowledge and novelty regarding genetic risk factors.
Authors: Cirello V Abstract Familial non-medullary thyroid cancer (FNMTC) constitutes 3-9% of all thyroid cancers and occur in two or more first-degree relatives in the absence of predisposing environmental factors. Out of all FNMTC cases, only 5% are represented by syndromic forms (Gardner's syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis, Cowden's syndrome, Carney complex 1, Werner's syndrome and DICER1 syndrome), in which thyroid cancer occurs as a minor component and the genetic alterations are wellknown. The non-syndromic forms represent the majority of all FNMTCs (95%), and the thyroid cancer is the predomi...

Sex difference in the association between malnutrition and hypoglycemia in hospitalized patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Malnutrition risk, as measured by the NRS2002, is associated with significantly increased incidence of hypoglycemia in women alone. Females who lose weight prior to hospitalization have an increased risk to develop hypoglycemia. PMID: 33006466 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Endocrinologica)
