Early therapeutic lamellar keratoplasty for acanthamoeba keratitis followed by implantable Collamer lens for visual rehabilitation
Saeed Al-Motowa, Sarah AlMutawa, Trad Al-KadiMiddle East African Journal of Ophthalmology 2020 27(4):244-246 We are reporting the case of a 25-year-old female who developed acanthamoeba keratitis after wearing contact lenses for high myopia. She was diagnosed as acanthamoeba and started the treatment of antiacanthamoeba for 3 consecutive weeks, followed by bare Descemet's therapeutic lamellar keratoplasty (LKP) with the maintenance of antiacanthamoeba treatment to control the infection. In the late postoperative period, visual rehabilitation was obtained by insertion of implantable Collamer lens (ICL) with her ...

Overfiltering Bleb en Route to Annular Ciliochoroidal Effusion
We report a case of ciliochoroidal effusion mimicking aqueous misdirection after combined glaucoma and cataract surgery. A 75-year-old male with pseudoexfoliation, chronic angle-closure glaucoma, and advanced optic disc damage developed ciliochoroidal effusion after a combined trabeculectomy and phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation. The patient presented with overfiltering bleb, hypotony, and a uniformly shallow anterior chamber that mimicked aqueous misdirection in the clinical picture. Reformation of anterior chamber followed by revision of the bleb was performed. Ultrasound biomicroscopy confirmed the ...

Superficial Temporal Muscle Fascia Grafting: Successful Transplant of Surgical-induced Necrotizing Scleritis
Hsouna M Zgolli, Sonya Mabrouk, Olfa fekih, Ines Malek, Leila NacefMiddle East African Journal of Ophthalmology 2020 27(4):238-240 To report the case of a surgical-induced necrotizing scleritis (SINS) following vitreoretinal surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, successfully managed by superficial muscle temporal fascia grafting. An 18-year-old teenager, with a history of a 23G vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment of the left eye, presented with intense left ocular pain, decreased visual acuity to counting fingers and eye redness. Split lamp examination showed: Conjunctival...

Meshaal A Aljebreen, Abdulaziz K Alotaibi, Malek AlrobaianMiddle East African Journal of Ophthalmology 2020 27(4):235-237 To report a case of linezolid-induced toxic optic neuropathy. Clinical examination and imaging are presented over a 4-month interval from initial presentation to subsequent follow-up of 4 months after discontinuation of linezolid. The patient was found to have optic neuropathy as demonstrated by clinical presentation and examination. Upon discontinuation of linezolid, the patient's visual acuity, visual fields, and color vision significantly improved. Linezolid has previously been reported t...

Nodular Posterior Scleritis Masquerading as a Subretinal Mass
Naseer Ally, Aubrey MakgotloeMiddle East African Journal of Ophthalmology 2020 27(4):231-234 This is the case report of a 50-year-old female with no systemic comorbidities who presented to the eye clinic with a 1-month history of right-sided eye pain and visual loss. Examination revealed no signs of inflammation in the right eye, with no proptosis or conjunctival injection. A relative afferent pupillary defect was present with no inflammatory cells in the vitreous. On fundoscopy, there was a swollen disc, a large superior creamy white subretinal mass associated with a shallow overlying retinal detachment. B-scan ultrasono...

Familial Retinal Arterial Macroaneurysms with Peripheral Retinal Ischemia: A Characterization on Ultra-Widefield Fluorescein Angiography
Mohammed D Alotaibi, Waleed K Alsarhani, Bader S Al-Qahtani, Abdulrahman F AlBloushi, Ahmed M Abu El-AsrarMiddle East African Journal of Ophthalmology 2020 27(4):228-230 Retinal arterial macroaneurysm with supravalvular pulmonic stenosis (RAMSVPS), also known as familial retinal arterial macroaneurysm syndrome, is an autosomal recessive disorder associated with many life-threatening complications. The disease is characterized by progressive multiple retinal arterial macroaneurysms, retinal arterial beading, and recurrent vitreous hemorrhage. Here, we describe the first case of RAMSVPS associated with peripheral ischemia e...

Ocular and Periocular Tumors in India: An EyeSmart Electronic Medical Record Analysis of 9633 Cases from a Referral Center
CONCLUSIONS: The present study results indicate the incidence and distribution of ocular and periocular tumors in a large cohort in India. Retinoblastoma is the most common tumor encountered in a referral-based comprehensive ophthalmic oncology practice in India. The use of EMRs enables to capture the structured information and big data analysis of the same. (Source: Middle East African Journal of Ophthalmology)

Intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide in Von Hippel & #8211;Lindau patient with novel mutation
Maryam Bunajem, Moustafa Magliyah, Yahya AlzahraniMiddle East African Journal of Ophthalmology 2020 27(3):188-190 von Hippel–Lindau (VHL) is a multisystemic inherited disease which most commonly affects the retina and central nervous system. The hallmark retinal manifestation of VHL in the eye is retinal capillary hemangioblastoma (RCH). Significant visual morbidity can result from exudative retinal detachments (ERDs) or tractional retinal detachments. Here, we present a 21-year-old male with long-standing poor vision in the right eye. On examination, he was found to have a massive ERD in the right eye with m...
