Natural menopausal age and cardiovascular disease risk factors in older Chinese women: Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study
Objective: To examine the associations of natural menopausal age with cardiovascular disease risk factors and whether the associations varied by parity in older Chinese women. Methods: Information of demographic characteristics, lifestyles, and reproductive factors was collected by face-to-face interview. Framingham Risk Score was used as an indicator of cardiovascular disease risk, with a score ≥ 10% considered as high cardiovascular disease risk (vs low, dichotomous). Multivariable logistic and linear regressions were used to examine the associations of menopausal age with cardiovascular disease risk factors...

Effects of heavy metals on hypertension during menopause: a Korean community-based cross-sectional study
Objective: To examine the associations between serum cadmium, lead, and mercury and hypertension in pre- and postmenopausal women. Methods: Serum heavy metal (cadmium, lead, and mercury) levels were analyzed in 7,226 randomly selected women who participated in Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2009 to 2017. Odds ratios (ORs) for hypertension were calculated for log2-transformed serum heavy metal levels, median tertile levels of serum cadmium, mercury, and lead, and for interactions between heavy metal levels and tertiles, after covariate adjustment. Results: A doubling of serum...

Mind the gap: primary care physicians and gynecologists’ knowledge about menopause and their attitudes to hormone therapy use in Jamaica
This study was a cross-sectional study using a stratified sample of physicians across the four health regions in Jamaica, between September and October 2017. A total of 145 physicians (75% response rate) completed a questionnaire to assess knowledge and attitudes toward menopause and prescribing hormonal therapy. Univariate and bivariate analyses were used to describe and compare the knowledge, attitudes, and practices in participants. Results: The majority of physicians (66%) self-reported a moderate level of knowledge of menopausal treatment options. Self-reported knowledge was associated with years in practice (P...

“It just makes me feel a little less alone”: a qualitative exploration of the podcast Menopause: Unmuted on women's perceptions of menopause
Conclusions: The podcast “menopause: unmuted” helped women to learn about the menopause experience, have a greater sense of belonging to a community of women, and feel empowered to make changes in their own lives. Sharing stories via podcasts has potential as an accessible and impactful medium to educate women and reduce the widespread stigma associated with menopause. (Source: Menopause)

Age at menopause among rural and urban women in the state of Campeche, Mexico
Conclusions: The early mean recalled age at menopause in southern Hopelchén was consistent with previous studies in the Yucatán peninsula. As expected, probit and Kaplan-Meier analyses demonstrated later ages at menopause. Contrary to our expectations, Maya/non-Maya ethnicity was not associated with age at menopause. Demographic and reproductive factors were more important than ethnicity in explaining variation in age at menopause within the state of Campeche, Mexico. (Source: Menopause)

Prevalence of pre-sarcopenia among postmenopausal women younger than 65 years
This study aimed to measure the prevalence of pre-sarcopenia and sarcopenia in middle-aged postmenopausal women and to determine the factors associated with low muscle mass. Methods: In this cross-sectional study conducted in the Menopause Clinic, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, we used the bioelectrical impedance analysis method to determine the appendicular muscle mass using a body composition analyzer (TANITA MC980 Plus). Appendicular muscle mass index, handgrip strength, and 6-m gait speed were measured in 340 women aged 45 to 65 years. Hormonal profiles, anthropometric data, and relevant history were re...

Dietary syringic acid reduces fat mass in an ovariectomy-induced mouse model of obesity
Objective: Postmenopausal women are at increased risk of metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Therefore, the chemoprevention of postmenopausal changes in health via dietary supplements is important. Syringic acid (SA) is a phenolic compound present in the fruit of the assai palm, Euterpe oleracea, and in the mycelium of the shiitake mushroom, Lentinula edodes. This compound shows no affinity for estrogen receptors and may exert disease-preventive effects. Reportedly, dietary SA ameliorates high-fat diet-induced obesity in mice; however, its effects on estrogen deficiency-induced obesity are still unclear. T...

Hand grip strength and health-related quality of life in postmenopausal women: a national population-based study
