Silent Intruder: Unusual Presentation of Neurocysticercosis in an HIV-Infected Patient from the Far Northern Brazilian Amazon
This article presents a case report of a 44-year-old male patient residing in the rural area of Roraima, the northernmost region of Brazil within the Amazon Forest. The patient, with chronic HIV infection, acquired the Taenia solium helminth, resulting in neurocysticercosis development. Remarkably, the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis was not initially apparent but emerged through meticulous analysis following a motorcycle accident. The absence of seizures, a common clinical manifestation, complicated the diagnostic process, making it an uncommon case of NCC, which may be related to co-infection. As the patient's condition ...

Paraspinal Muscle Changes in Individuals with and without Chronic Low Back Pain over a 4-Month Period: A Longitudinal MRI Study
Conclusions: This study provides insights into LM, ES, and psoas morphology in both healthy controls and affected individuals over a 4-month period without any intervention. Our findings suggest that psoas CSA at higher lumbar levels and CSA % asymmetry in general may be a better indicator of pathology and the development of pathology over time. Evaluating natural variations in paraspinal musculature over longer time frames may provide information on subtle changes in healthy controls and affected individuals and their potential role in chronic LBP.PMID:38541216 | PMC:PMC10971976 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030490 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Associations between Atopic Dermatitis and Behavior Difficulties in Children
Conclusions: Children with AD present a higher risk of BDs than healthy controls. Patients with severe AD experience more sleep disturbances and a greater intensity of itching compared to mild-moderate AD. The occurrence of BDs was not related to serum cortisol levels. The cortisol level, severity, age, gender, duration of illness, intensity of pruritus, and sleep disturbance did not affect the development of BDs.PMID:38541218 | PMC:PMC10972345 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030492 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Respiratory Support Effects over Time on Regional Lung Ventilation Assessed by Electrical Impedance Tomography in Premature Infants
Conclusions: Our study revealed that volume-targeted mechanical ventilation results in higher EELZ and DeltaZ compared to spontaneously breathing infants receiving non-invasive respiratory support. However, lung heterogeneity was lower during mechanical ventilation. Our study also reaffirmed that spontaneous breathing promotes greater involvement of the dependent lung compared to mechanical ventilation.PMID:38541220 | PMC:PMC10971897 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030494 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Disseminated Enterovirus Infection in a Patient Affected by Follicular Lymphoma Treated with Obinutuzumab: A Case Report and a Narrative Review of the Literature
Conclusions: onco-hematological patients who receive immune-chemotherapy with a combination of treatments which depress adaptative immunity, which includes the antiCD20 obinutuzumab, could be at higher risk of disseminated EV infection, including CNS and cardiac involvement.PMID:38541221 | PMC:PMC10972032 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030495 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Does Basal Morning Luteinizing Hormone (bLH) Predict Central Precocious Puberty (CPP) in Girls?
Conclusions: Morning bLH > 1.5 IU/L could be carefully used as a diagnostic predictor of CPP. The GnRH test, even reduced to 30 min, could be reserved for girls who show low intermediate morning bLH and specific clinical signs of pubertal development.PMID:38541222 | PMC:PMC10972438 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030497 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Overlapping Case of Advanced Systemic Sclerosis and IgG4-Related Disease after Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
We report the case of a 44-year-old female patient with overlapping progressive diffuse SSc and sinonasal IgG4-RD. After 11 years of ineffective SSc treatment, AHSCT was performed. The 63-month follow-up showed a regression of SSc symptoms. AHSCT was not intended as treatment in the case of IgG4RD, although the first symptoms of the disease developed before transplantation. The sinus lesions progressed after AHSCT and remained indolent only after surgical treatment (bilateral ethmoidectomy, sphenoidotomy, intranasal buccal antrostomy), which allowed histopathological confirmation of IgG4-RD.PMID:38541223 | PMC:PMC10972323 ...

Effects of Stationary Bikes and Elliptical Machines on Knee Joint Kinematics during Exercise
Conclusions: This study focused on knee joint torque variations during pedaling on indoor stationary bicycles and elliptical machines. Elliptical machines showed higher peak values of forces and torque, particularly during the propulsive and recovery phases, indicating potential challenges to the knee joint. Notably, peak pedal angles occurred earlier on indoor stationary bicycles, emphasizing the impact of equipment choice on joint kinetics.PMID:38541224 | PMC:PMC10972514 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030498 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Updated Perspectives on Lifestyle Interventions as Secondary Stroke Prevention Measures: A Narrative Review
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 Mar 19;60(3):504. doi: 10.3390/medicina60030504.ABSTRACTDespite being highly preventable, stroke is the second-most common cause of death and disability in the world. Secondary prevention is critical as the stroke recurrence risk is 6- to 15-fold higher than the risk of stroke in the general population. Stroke recurrence is associated with higher mortality rates and increased disability levels. Lifestyle modifications should address not single but multiple cardiovascular risk factors to effectively reduce the risk of stroke. Lifestyle modifications on a personal level should include adequate physica...
