Overview of Cochrane Systematic Reviews for Rehabilitation Interventions in Individuals with Upper Limb Fractures: A Mapping Synthesis
Conclusions. This overview provided the effect and the certainty of evidence of rehabilitation interventions available after ULFs using a mapping synthesis. To date, there is a need to further the effectiveness and safety of these interventions for persons with ULFs, improving methodological quality of the research in the field.PMID:38541195 | PMC:PMC10971878 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030469 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Minimally Invasive Management and Diagnosis of Ectopic Splenic Pregnancy
This report describes the case of a 32-year-old woman with ectopic pregnancy in the spleen, which was complicated by active bleeding. The patient complained of intermittent pain in her left side and lower abdomen that lasted several days. The serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) was increased, but no intrauterine gestational sac was found via transvaginal sonography. A computed tomography (CT) examination revealed the presence of a heterogeneous structure in the left peritoneal cavity, inferior to the spleen; signs of active extravasation; and a large amount of hemorrhagic fluid in the pelvis. An angiography ex...

The Effect of Thyroid Surgery on the Accuracy of Palpation-Based Cricothyroid Membrane Identification in Female Patients: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study
Conclusions: Thyroid surgery history in female patients may hinder the accurate palpation-based identification of the CTM, suggesting a need for enhanced clinical practices and considerations during airway management training.PMID:38541197 | PMC:PMC10971964 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030471 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Italian Survey on Endoscopic Biliary Drainage Approach in Patients with Surgically Altered Anatomy
Conclusions: This survey shows that the endoscopic BD approach is extremely heterogeneous, especially in patients with Roux-en-Y reconstruction or after ERCP failure in Billroth-II reconstruction. Percutaneous BD is still taken into account by a significant proportion of centers in the case of Roux-en-Y anatomy. The total number of endoscopic BD procedures performed in non-tertiary centers is usually low, but this result does not correspond to an adequate rate of referral to more experienced centers.PMID:38541198 | PMC:PMC10972116 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030472 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

New Perspectives in Third Molar Auto-Transplantation: Literature Review and a Case Report of Clinical, Financial and Forensic Implications
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 Mar 13;60(3):473. doi: 10.3390/medicina60030473.ABSTRACTThird molar extraction is the most common procedure in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Third molars are considered less functional than other teeth and are often extracted. Sometimes, they are also used for auto-transplantation for the benefit of oral rehabilitation. Since many biological factors are involved in this surgical approach, herein, we outline a review of the biological characteristics of medico-legal/forensic interest, in addition to presenting a successful clinical case. A scoping review of currently available research data (follow...

Sex Differences in Insomnia and Circadian Rhythm Disorders: A Systematic Review
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 Mar 13;60(3):474. doi: 10.3390/medicina60030474.ABSTRACTInsomnia and circadian rhythm disorders are increasingly common in modern society and lead to significant challenges for people's health and well-being. Some studies suggests that men and women differ in neurohormonal secretion, biological processes, and brain morphology. Thus, such differences may affect the etiology, manifestation, and course of sleep disorders, including insomnia and circadian rhythm. This systematic review aims to synthesize the existing literature on sex differences in insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders. PubMed, MEDLI...

Environmental Exposure to Pesticides and the Risk of Child Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Conclusions: The areas with the highest greenhouse concentration had higher incidences of neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly in boys, and lower age of referral. Chromosomal abnormalities were prevalent for prenatal diagnoses, gestational age below thirty-two weeks for perinatal diagnoses, and brain damage for postnatal diagnoses. Future studies should analyze the connection between pesticide exposure and neurodevelopmental disorders using spatial point pattern analysis.PMID:38541201 | PMC:PMC10972353 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030475 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

The Role of Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Detecting Early Dysglycemia and Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 Mar 14;60(3):477. doi: 10.3390/medicina60030477.ABSTRACTCystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) is the most common comorbidity in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). CFRD has been correlated with important clinical outcomes, including poor nutrition, reduced pulmonary function, and earlier mortality. However, clinical decline due to abnormalities of blood glucose (dysglycemia) begins early in CF, before the diagnosis of CFRD by the gold-standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has been validated in patients with CF and has been recognized as a valuable tool in...

Primary Thyroid Lymphoma: A Retrospective-Observational Study in a Single Institutional Center
Conclusions: PTL represents a diagnosis that needs to be taken into account, especially in women with a history of Hashimoto autoimmune thyroiditis, presenting a cervical tumor with progressive growth. PTL is a lymphoid neoplasia with favorable outcome, with relatively long survival if it is diagnosed at younger ages.PMID:38541203 | PMC:PMC10971821 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030476 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Conclusions: The analysis identified two polymorphisms, rs17655 and rs751402, as being significantly associated with the risk of HNC. The study underscored the influence of various factors, such as the type of cancer, ethnicity, source of control, and sample size on these associations.PMID:38541204 | PMC:PMC10972270 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030478 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Assessing the Effect of Enzymatic Debridement on the Scar Quality in Partial-Thickness Burns to Deep Dermal Burns of the Hand: A Long-Term Evaluation
Conclusions: In summary, it can be concluded that the objective skin quality following enzymatic debridement is comparable to that of healthy skin after 12 months and subjectively fares better than that after tangential excision. This confirms the superiority of enzymatic debridement in the treatment of deep dermal burns of the hand and solidifies its position as the gold standard.PMID:38541207 | PMC:PMC10972138 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030481 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))
