Biological properties of Phoma macrostoma related to non-dermatophyte onychomycosis
We report a rare case of non-dermatophytic onychomycosis of the toenail caused by Phoma macrostoma. Was studied the biological properties of the strain isolated in Kazakhstan. P. macrostoma forms pink colonies, the reverzum is pink-orange. The mycelium is colorless, septate. The appearance of growth tubes from pycnidospores occurs within 12 hours, mycelial growth and branching after 18 hours, the appearance of pycnids is 48 hours. The saccharolytic and urease activity of the strain is low. (Source: Medical Mycology Case Reports)

Cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala xenobiotica: A case report
We report a case of phaeohyphomycosis that affected the leg of a 45-year-old Brazilian man, car mechanic and renal transplanted. The direct mycological examination evidenced dematiaceous septated hyphae. The pathogenic fungal species was identified as Exophiala xenobiotica. Antifungal activity in vitro revealed terbinafine as the best antifungal. For treatment, it was chosen surgical excision of the entire lesion and used systemic itraconazole. Phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala xenobiotica is extremely rare and is closely related to transplant patients. (Source: Medical Mycology Case Reports)

Feline disseminated cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis due to Exophiala spinifera
Publication date: Available online 24 December 2019Source: Medical Mycology Case ReportsAuthor(s): Julie-Anne Daly, Vit Hubka, Alena Kubátová, Marina Gimeno, Vanessa BarrsAbstractA six-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented for a subcutaneous digital nodular lesion on the right forelimb. On physical examination a similar lesion was identified on the right hindlimb. Disseminated cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis was diagnosed from histopathological changes in representative tissue biopsies and fungal culture. The isolate was identified by sequencing of ITS rDNA as Exophiala spinifera. This is the first report of dissemin...

HIV-associated disseminated histoplasmosis successfully treated with isavuconazole consolidation therapy
Publication date: Available online 20 December 2019Source: Medical Mycology Case ReportsAuthor(s): Andrea Mazzella, Neil RH. Stone, Erica RM. Pool, Ana García Mingo, Sorina Bolache, Chris WoodAbstractA 30-year-old man with advanced HIV and disseminated histoplasmosis deteriorated after stepping down from intravenous liposomal amphotericin B to itraconazole.Therapeutic levels of itraconazole and posaconazole were not achieved, therefore liposomal amphotericin B was reintroduced. Stepdown treatment was switched to oral isavuconazole; since then the patient has remained well. (Source: Medical Mycology Case Reports)

Achievement of long-term remission of disseminated histoplasmosis in an AIDS patient
Publication date: Available online 19 December 2019Source: Medical Mycology Case ReportsAuthor(s): Akihide Nakamura, Isao Tawara, Kazuko Ino, Takeshi Matsumoto, Akinobu Hayashi, Hiroshi Imai, Yasunori Muraosa, Katsuhiko Kamei, Naoyuki KatayamaAbstractHistoplasmosis, a fungal infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, is poor prognosis once it disseminated, especially in immunocompromised patients. A 50-year-old Japanese-Brazilian male with multiple cervical lymphadenopathies was diagnosed as disseminated histoplasmosis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Anti-fungal therapy was initiated followed by anti-retrov...

Persistent candida arthritis successfully treated with micafungin instillation and surgery. A case report
We report a rare case of C. krusei knee arthritis treated with instillation of micafungin and arthroscopy. A 49-year-old man hospitalized for treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukemia developed knee arthritis with C. krusei. He was treated with a combination of arthroscopic debridement, intravenous as well as intra-articular micafungin. Serum and intra-articular concentrations of micafungin were determined. After instillation of micafungin in the knee and arthroscopic debridement, the patient completely recovered. (Source: Medical Mycology Case Reports)

Complication of massive trauma by fungal infection and bone tuberculosis
We report a middle aged man who was admitted with severe necrotising fasciitis following a motor vehicle accident (MVA). Histopathology of the excised tissue suggested mucormycosis while a bone tissue culture revealed fully sensitive Mycobacterium tuberculosis. He received intravenous liposomal amphotericin B combined with multiple surgical debridements and ended with right shoulder disarticulation. In addition he completed a nine months course of anti-tuberculosis treatment. He remained stable one year following his admission. We believe that trauma contributed to both conditions by direct inoculation of fungal spores and ...

Contact lens associated keratitis due to Tintelnotia destructans
We report the first case of Tintelnotia destructans associated keratitis in a contact lens wearer in Australia. Corneal scrape showed fungal elements on direct microscopy leading to a prompt diagnosis of fungal keratitis and early topical and systemic antifungal therapy. The isolate was eventually identified by ITS gene sequencing. This case highlights the importance of accurate identification and antifungal susceptibility testing for the management of fungal keratitis. (Source: Medical Mycology Case Reports)
