Identifying academic motivation profiles and their association with mental health in medical school
CONCLUSION: Our results provide means to position medical students on the SDT continuum based on 'Low', 'Moderate', or 'High' levels of self-determination toward their studies. These AM profiles predict the mental health of medical freshmen, which supports the validity of the outcomes and highlight the risks of amotivation for psychological morbidity. The limitations and implications are discussed.PMID:37535843 | DOI:10.1080/10872981.2023.2242597 (Source: Medical Education Online)

Med Educ Online. 2023 Dec;28(1):2241182. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2023.2241182.ABSTRACTUndergraduate medical learners from historically marginalized groups face significant barriers, which was made concrete at our institution when a student presented her research indicating that Black students felt unsure about which faculty members to approach. To better support our students, we used Kern's model for curriculum development and a critical pedagogy approach to create a Faculty Allyship Curriculum (FAC). A total of 790 individuals attended 90 workshops across 16 months and 20 individuals have completed the FAC. A majority of pa...

Social justice in medical education: a student-led approach to addressing COVID-19 vaccine equity in the Hispanic/Latinx community
Med Educ Online. 2023 Dec;28(1):2241169. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2023.2241169.ABSTRACTThe current healthcare system disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, leading to disparities in health outcomes. As a result, medical schools need to equip future physicians with the tools to identify and address healthcare disparities. The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine implemented a Scholarly Concentration in Medical Social Justice (SCiMSJ) program to address this issue. Three medical students joined the program and pioneered a project to address the equitable vaccine distribution within the local Hispanic/Latinx...

Understanding medical professionalism using express team-based learning; a qualitative case-based study
This study aimed to investigate undergraduate medical students' understanding of MP using express team-based learning (e-TBL) at both campuses of Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI). Using the key principles of a sociocultural theoretical lens in adult learning theory, we designed e-TBL as a context-learning-based educational strategy. We conducted three e-TBL sessions on cross-cultural communication and health disparities, a reflective report on clinical encounters, and professionalism in practice. We collected, collated, and analyzed the student experiences qualitatively using data gathered from team-based case disc...
