Telehealth to Improve Perinatal Care Access
The United States has the worst maternal mortality rate of peer countries. Since 1935, the maternal mortality risk among Black women has remained three to four times higher than that of White women. Perinatal health care is not available in all areas, which limits the access for certain groups. Many women in the United States live in maternity care deserts with no access to obstetric providers, whereas others live in areas with very limited access. One way to bridge the gap between effective perinatal care and access to care is use of telehealth. Telehealth allows health care providers to communicate directly with patients...

Data-Driven Nurse Staffing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The challenge of nurse staffing is amplified in the acute care neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting, where a wide range of highly variable factors affect staffing. A comprehensive overview of infant factors (severity, intensity), nurse factors (education, experience, preferences, team dynamics), and unit factors (structure, layout, shift length, care model) influencing pre-shift NICU staffing is presented, along with how intra-shift variability of these and other factors must be accounted for to maintain effective and efficient assignments. There is opportunity to improve workload estimations and acuity measures for...

Acuity-Based Staffing in Labor and Delivery Using Electronic Health Record Data
Background: Planning safe and effective nurse staffing can be challenging for nurse leaders of labor and delivery units due to the dynamic nature of birth and unpredictable fluctuations in census and acuity. The electronic health record (EHR) has a vast source of patient data that can be used to retrospectively review patient needs and nurse staffing gaps that can serve as a basis for prospective planning for nurse staffing. Purpose: This quality improvement project was initiated with the goal of developing real-time and longitudinal reports to quantify hourly nurse staffing needs based on patient census, acuity...
