Impact of Obstetric Emergency High-Fidelity Simulation on Maternity Nurses' Self-Efficacy in the Rural Hospital Setting
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of an obstetric emergency high-fidelity simulation on maternity nurses' perceived self-efficacy levels at three different time points. Study Design: We used a quasi-experimental, repeated measures design. Methods: A convenience sample of maternity nurses recruited from three institutions within a single rural health care system participated in simulation exercises at an academic high-fidelity simulation center. They completed the Obstetric Nursing Self Efficacy survey before, immediately after, and 2 months following the simulation. Results: ...

Sudden Unexpected Postnatal Collapse Resulting in Newborn Death in the United States
Background: The sudden collapse of an apparently healthy newborn, or sudden unexpected postnatal collapse (SUPC) is fatal in about half of cases. Epidemiological characteristics of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) in the first week of life differ from those in the postperinatal age group (7-365 days). Aim: To describe the characteristics of SUPC resulting in neonatal death. Methods: We analyzed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Birth Cohort Linked Birth/Infant Death Data Set (2003-2013: 41,125,233 births and 37,624 SUIDs). SUPC was defined as infants born ≥35 weeks gestational age, wit...

Nurses' Experiences with Implementation of a Postcesarean Birth Opioid-Sparing Protocol
This study explored nurses' experiences with an opioid-sparing protocol at a single institution, where inpatient opioid prescribing was reduced by over half. Method: Focus groups were used to identify key facilitators and barriers to implementation of the opioid-sparing protocol. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) guided data collection and analysis. Focus groups were recorded, transcribed, thematically coded, and analyzed for barriers and facilitators using predetermined CFIR domains. Results: Three focus groups of nurses who care for women during postpartum were conducted in March...

Impact of COVID-19 on Maternal Mental Health
The COVID-19 pandemic led to several states mandating social distancing and sheltering in place along with a shift in health care delivery, unprecedented unemployment rates, financial stress, and emotional concerns. For pregnant and postpartum women, limited social support and social isolation with social distancing and fear of COVID-19 exposure or infection for themselves, their fetus, or their newborn infants, have implications for maternal mental health.
