Lower urinary tract dysfunction in pediatric patients after ureteroneocystostomy due to vesicoureteral reflux: Long ‐term follow‐up
ConclusionsLUTD may not resolve after a ureteroneocystostomy, and additional therapy could be necessary. Due to the probability of damage to the ureterovesical nerve and/or disturbed bladder dynamics, de novo LUTD may occur in patients with bilateral high‐grade reflux without LUTD before a ureteroneocystostomy. Effects of varying degrees of partial bladder outlet obstruction on urinary bladder function of rats: A novel link to inflammation, oxidative stress and hypoxia
ConclusionThe results of the present study reveal the importance of oxidative stress‐induced NF‐κB signaling in bladder dysfunction with severe obstruction. Altered HIF signaling may contribute to the functional impairment after PBOO. Novel and evolving therapies targeting oxidative and/or inflammatory pathways may be a reasonable strategy for the management of lower urinary tract symptoms or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Management of urethral stricture: High ‐pressure balloon dilation versus optical internal urethrotomy
ObjectiveUrethral stenosis is a disease in which the lumen of the urethra becomes constricted by fibrosis. Such stenoses have been treated by urethral dilation using a bougie and optical internal urethrotomy (OIU). Recently, high‐pressure balloon dilation (BD) has been developed as a new treatment method for urethral stenosis. The present study compared the effectiveness of urethral dilation by BD and OIU. MethodsTwenty‐two patients of urethral stenosis were treated at Yokohama City University Medical Center between 2005 and 2015. Of these, 13 underwent BD, whereas OIU was performed in 9. BD was performed at 30 ...

Possible role of hyposensitivity of C ‐fiber afferents at the proximal urethra in the development of urge urinary incontinence in patients with detrusor overactivity
ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to investigate associations between urethral sensation and urge urinary incontinence (UUI) in patients with and without detrusor overactivity (DO). MethodsThe medical records of 80 consecutive patients who underwent filling cystometry and urethral current perception threshold (CPT) tests were examined retrospectively. Following the exclusion of 4 patients not eligible for analysis, patients were classified into neurogenic DO, idiopathic DO, or DO‐negative groups based on neurological and cystometric findings (n = 30, 12, and 34, respectively). This study assessed the effectiveness and safety of a medical device containing purified bovine colostrum (Monurelle Biogel; Zambon, Bresso, Italy) in improving vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA), sexual function, urinary symptoms, and quality of life (QoL) in postmenopausal women. MethodsIn all, 172 postmenopausal women with VVA were included in the study. All women were treated with vaginal Monurelle Biogel daily for 12 weeks. Patients underwent clinical examinations, completed a 3‐day voiding diary, and had VVA graded using the Vaginal Health Index (VHI) at baseline and 12 weeks. Patients also completed the Fema...

Female bladder outlet obstruction: Common symptoms masking an uncommon cause
ConclusionsBOO was present in 19% of women with LUTS. Functional sphincteric obstruction was the most common cause (36%), followed by obstruction after anti‐incontinence surgery (21%). The most common presenting symptom was daytime urinary frequency. BOO should be suspected in women with refractory LUTS, especially those presenting with urinary frequency. MethodsMen aged 50 years or older who were hospitalized for urological diseases were investigated. Body water evaluation was performed three times with a bioelectric impedance method: (i) 17:00, (ii) 30 min after (short‐term), and (iii) waking up (long‐term). A frequency volume chart was used to evaluate the status of nocturnal urine production, and the factors affecting HUS were investigated. ResultsA total of 50 patients (mean ag...
