Thoracic Ultrasound in COVID-19: Use of Lung and Diaphragm Ultrasound in Evaluating Dyspnea in Survivors of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome from COVID-19 Pneumonia in a Post-ICU Clinic
ConclusionHigher LUS correlated significantly with patient-reported dyspnea at rest and exertion. Higher LUS significantly correlated with more exertional oxygen desaturation during 6MWT and lower 6MWT distance. DE did not correlate with dyspnea. (Source: Lung)

Pulmonary Protection from Left Ventricular Distension During Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Review and Management Algorithm
AbstractThe use of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) in adults for refractory cardiogenic shock has risen exponentially during the prior decade. Although VA-ECMO provides cardiopulmonary support, it can alter left ventricular (LV) loading conditions leading to LV distension, which makes the lungs susceptible to congestion and promotes intracardiac thrombosis. These conditions can be alleviated by pharmacologic and mechanical unloading, but gaps in knowledge remain on optimal timing and methods of this approach. This review provides an overview of the epidemiology of VA-ECMO, describes pathophysiolo...

Early Desaturation During 6-Minute Walk Test is a Predictor of Mortality in COPD
ConclusionsThe early desaturation seen in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is associated with greater mortality and is likely responsible for the poor prognosis shown globally in patients who desaturate. The survival of patients with early desaturation is almost 4  years less with respect to non-desaturators, and they, thus, require closer observation. (Source: Lung)

Efficacy and Safety of Garadacimab in Combination with Standard of Care Treatment in Patients with Severe COVID-19
ConclusionIn patients with severe COVID-19, garadacimab did not confer a clinical benefit over placebo. Transient aPTT prolongation and suppressed FXIIa-mKA showed target engagement of garadacimab that was not associated with bleeding events even with concomitant anticoagulant use. The safety profile of garadacimab was consistent with previous studies in patients with hereditary angioedema.ClinicalTrials. gov IdentifierNCT04409509. Date of registration: 28 May, 2020. The Association Between Insulin Use and Asthma: An Epidemiological Observational Analysis and Mendelian Randomization Study
ConclusionsAn association between insulin use and an increased risk of asthma was found via the real-world data from the NHANES. In addition, the current study identified a causal effect and provided a genetic evidence of insulin use and asthma. More studies are needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the association between insulin use and asthma. (Source: Lung)

Melatonin Protects Against Hyperoxia-Induced Apoptosis in Alveolar Epithelial type II  Cells by Activating the MT2/PI3K/AKT/ETS1 Signaling Pathway
ConclusionMelatonin prevents hyperoxia-induced apoptosis by activating the MT2/PI3K/AKT/ETS1 axis in alveolar epithelial cells. (Source: Lung)

Lung Cancer Screening Penetration in an Urban Underserved County
ConclusionThough statistically significant differences were found between cohorts, likely due to sample size, few clinically meaningful differences were found, implying our lung cancer screening program was effective in reaching the desired population. Demographics-based programs should be considered in global efforts to screen vulnerable populations. (Source: Lung)

The Efficacy and Safety of Gefapixant in a Phase 3b Trial of Patients with Recent-Onset Chronic Cough
ConclusionGefapixant 45  mg BID demonstrated significantly greater improvement in cough-specific health status from baseline compared to placebo, in participants with recent-onset chronic cough. The most common AEs were related to taste and serious AEs were rare. (Source: Lung)

Deficiency of HtrA3 Attenuates Bleomycin-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis Via TGF- β1/Smad Signaling Pathway
ConclusionThe expression level of HtrA3 is increased in fibrotic lungs. HtrA3 knockout alleviates the symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis probably via the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway. Therefore, HtrA3 inhibition is a potential therapeutic target for pulmonary fibrosis. (Source: Lung)
