Iron deficiency anemia as a predictor of coronary artery abnormalities in Kawasaki disease.
Conclusion: The indicators of IDA, especially ferritin, were highly associated with CAA, so that they were stronger predictors compared to the Kobayashi score. The IDA indicators can be used to predict CAA development and suggest the need for early intervention. PMID: 30744317 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Surfactants preparations for preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome: past, present, and future.
Authors: Jeon GW Abstract After the first successful trial of surfactant replacement therapy for preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) by Fujiwara in 1980, several animal-derived natural surfactants and synthetic surfactants have been developed. Synthetic surfactants were made to overcome limitations of natural surfactants such as expensiveness, immune reactions, and infections due to animal proteins contained in natural surfactants. However, first-generation synthetic surfactants that are protein-free have failed to prove superiority over natural surfactants because they do not have sur...

A Perspective on Partially Hydrolyzed Protein Infant Formula In Non-Exclusively Breastfed Infants.
The objectives of this paper were to review the evidence of pHF whey formula for non-breastfed infants, not only to prevent of atopic disease in high-risk infants but also as routine starter formula regardless of the allergic risk status. Efficacy and tolerability of adjunctive perampanel treatment in children under 12 years of age with refractory epilepsy.
Conclusion: Perampanel offers a treatment option for refractory epilepsy in children as in adults. Adjunctive treatment with perampanel requires special consideration in those with underlying medical conditions to prevent serious adverse events. Central line-associated bloodstream infections in neonates.
Authors: Cho HJ, Cho HK Abstract Newborn infants, including premature infants, are high-risk patients susceptible to various microorganisms. Catheter-related bloodstream infections are the most common type of nosocomial infections in this population. Regularly educating and training the medical staffs are most important as a preventive strategy for central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). Bundle approaches and the use of checklists during the insertion and maintenance of central catheters are effective measures to reduce the incidence of CLABSIs. Chlorhexidine, commonly used as a skin disi...

The adiposity rebound in the 21st century children: meaning for what?
Authors: Kang MJ Abstract With the increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity worldwide, early adiposity rebound, which is known to have a strong association with obesity, has recently been a focus of research. Early adiposity rebound is conventionally known to have a close relationship with non-communicable diseases. However, novel insights into early adiposity rebound have implied an acceleration of growth and puberty, which is directly reflected in the trends in the timing of adiposity rebound, in the 21st century compared with in the past. Furthermore, the observation that lean mass changes r...

Secular change in waist circumference and waist-height ratio and optimal cutoff of waist-height ratio for abdominal obesity among Korean children and adolescents.
Conclusions: The presented data of WC and WHR showed no secular change over 10 years. The optimal WHR cutoff for abdominal obesity, 0.48 would be helpful to diagnose and to manage obesity in Korean 13-18 years old adolescents, preventing obesity related cardiometabolic complications. Comparison of effectiveness of growth hormone therapy according to disease-causing genes in children with Noonan syndrome.
Conclusions: The 3-year GH therapy in the 23 prepubertal patients with NS was effective in improving height SDS, GV, and serum IGF-1 levels. FGU group showed a better response to rhGH therapy compared with the detected groups with PTPN11, RAF1, and SOS1 groups. A contact investigation after exposure to a child with disseminated tuberculosis mimicking inflammatory bowel disease.
CONCLUSION: This is the first reported case of TB transmission among young children from a pediatric patient with disseminated TB in Korea. TB should be emphasized as a possible cause of chronic diarrhea and failure to thrive in children. A national TB control policy has been actively applied to identify Korean children with LTBI. De novo mutations in COL4A5 identified by whole exome sequencing in two girls with Alport syndrome in Korea.
Authors: Han KH, Park JE, Ki CS Abstract Alport syndrome (ATS) is an inherited glomerular disease caused by mutations in one of the type IV collagen novel chains (α3, α4, and α5). ATS is characterized by persistent microscopic hematuria starting from infancy, eventually leading to either progressive nephritis or end-stage renal disease. There are three known genetic forms of ATS, i.e., X-linked ATS, autosomal recessive ATS, and autosomal dominant ATS. About 80% of patients with ATS have X-linked ATS, caused by mutations in the type IV collagen α5 chain gene, COL4A5. Mutation detection rates are about 8...
