Effects of 6-Month Folic Acid Supplementation on Cognitive Function and Blood Biomarkers in Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Randomized Controlled Trial in China
Conclusion: There was a beneficial effect from relatively short-term folate supplementation on cognitive functioning in later life. Larger-scale, randomized, controlled trials of longer duration in selected age groups are needed. (Source: Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences)

Improved Function With Enhanced Protein Intake per Meal: A Pilot Study of Weight Reduction in Frail, Obese Older Adults
Conclusion: Obese, functionally limited older adults undergoing a 6-month weight loss intervention with a meal-based enhancement of protein quantity and quality lost similar amounts of weight but had greater functional improvements relative to the Control group. If confirmed, this dietary approach could have important implications for improving the functional status of this vulnerable population (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01715753). Vitamin D Levels and the Risk of Cognitive Decline in Chinese Elderly People: the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey
Conclusions: This first follow-up study of elderly people, including the oldest-old, in Asia shows that low vitamin D levels were associated with increased risk of subsequent cognitive decline and impairment. (Source: Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences)

Vitamin K Antagonists and Cognitive Function in Older Adults: The Three-City Cohort Study
Conclusion: These findings do not indicate a long-term detrimental effect of VKAs on cognition, but the risk–benefit balance of VKA treatment still deserves further research. (Source: Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences)

Vitamin K Status and Lower Extremity Function in Older Adults: The Health Aging and Body Composition Study
Conclusion: Older adults with higher vitamin K status had better physical performance scores at baseline, but data are less consistent longitudinally. Since lower extremity disability is a common consequence of multiple chronic diseases for which a role of vitamin K has been suggested, future studies are needed to determine if vitamin K supplementation could improve function in those with vitamin K insufficiency and clarify underlying mechanism(s). Which Frail Older People Are Dehydrated? The UK DRIE Study
Conclusions: DRIE found high prevalence of dehydration in older people living in UK long-term care, reinforcing the proposed association between cognitive and renal function and hydration. Dehydration is associated with increased mortality and disability in older people, but trials to assess effects of interventions to support healthy fluid intakes in older people living in residential care are needed to enable us to formally assess causal direction and any health benefits of increasing fluid intakes. Association Between Carbohydrate Nutrition and Successful Aging Over 10 Years
Conclusions: Consumption of dietary fiber from breads/cereals and fruits independently influenced the likelihood of aging successfully over 10 years. These findings suggest that increasing intake of fiber-rich foods could be a successful strategy in reaching old age disease free and fully functional. Macronutrients Intake and Incident Frailty in Older Adults: A Prospective Cohort Study
Conclusion: Intake of total protein, animal protein, and MUFAs was inversely associated with incident frailty. Promoting the intake of these nutrients might reduce frailty. (Source: Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences)
