Antihypertensive Use and the Effect of a Physical Activity Intervention in the Prevention of Major Mobility Disability Among Older Adults: The LIFE Study
Conclusions: The effects of long-term PA on the incidence of MMD and persistent MMD were similar among three subgroups of older adults stratified by their antihypertensive medication use. However, though statistical interactions did not reach significance, several findings may warrant future study in other cohorts given the post hoc nature of this study. Cerebral White Matter and Slow Gait: Contribution of Hyperintensities and Normal-appearing Parenchyma
Conclusions. Microstructural integrity is a moderating factor in the association between WMH and gait. Future studies should examine whether higher microstructural integrity represents a source of compensation in those with greater WMH burden to maintain function in late life. Free Thyroxine and Functional Mobility, Fitness, and Fatigue in Euthyroid Older Men and Women in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging
Conclusion: Older adults with low-normal FT4 exhibit better mobility, fitness, and fatigue profiles. Mildly down-regulated thyroid function appears to align with better function in old age and may serve as a biomarker of healthy longevity. Predictors of New Onset Sleep Medication and Treatment Utilization Among Older Adults in the United States
Conclusions: Starting a new prescription sleep medication may reflect poorer health and higher health care utilization, whereas beginning a sleep treatment may reflect an individual’s awareness of treatments and determination to treat their problem. Clinicians should be aware of predictors of new sleep medication and treatment users and discuss various forms of treatment or behavioral changes to help patients best manage sleep disturbance. Rising Energetic Cost of Walking Predicts Gait Speed Decline With Aging
Conclusions: These findings suggest that strategies to maintain walking efficiency hold significant implications for maintaining mobility in late life. Efforts to curb threats to walking efficiency should focus on therapies to treat gait and balance impairments, and reduce clinical disease burden. Gender-Specific Associations in Age-Related Changes in Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) and MRI Measured Body Composition in Healthy Caucasians
Conclusion: We concluded that gender affects the age-related changes in body composition as well as changes in body composition–REE relationship. This trial was registered at linicaltrials.gov as NCT01737034. (Source: Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences)

Aging-Related Considerations When Evaluating the Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second (FEV1) Over Time
Conclusion: A Z-score approach is more clinically meaningful when evaluating FEV1 over time, as it accounted for the effect of aging and was more frequently associated with multiple cardiopulmonary predictors. (Source: Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences)

Association of Self-Rated Health in Midlife With Mortality and Old Age Frailty: A 26-Year Follow-Up of Initially Healthy Men
Conclusions: SRH in clinically healthy midlife among volunteers of a primary prevention trial was related to the development of both prefrailty and frailty in old age, independent of baseline cardiovascular risk and later comorbidity. Older Is Not Wiser, Immunologically Speaking: Effect of Aging on Host Response to Clostridium difficile Infections
Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the most common cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and a significant burden on the health care system. Aging has been identified in the literature as a risk factor for CDI as well as adverse outcome from CDI. Although this effect of advanced age on CDI could be partially explained by clinical factors associated with aging, biologic factors are important. Innate immune system, responsible for immediate response to acute infections, plays a major role in CDI pathogenesis. Impairment in function of innate immunity with aging, demonstrated in other infection models, may lead to wor...

Multiple Chronic Condition Combinations and Depression in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Conclusions: Findings confirm extensive variability in the combinations of illnesses experienced by older adults and demonstrate the complex associations of specific illness combinations with depressive symptoms. Results highlight the need to expand our conceptualization of research and treatment around MCCs and call for a person-centered approach that addresses the unique needs of individuals with MCCs. Impact of Chronic Conditions and Multimorbidity on the Disability Burden in the Older Population in Belgium
Conclusions: The present findings provide a deeper understanding of the role of chronic conditions and multimorbidity on the disability burden in the older population in Belgium. Although the disease pairs showed a low contribution to the disability burden, their occurrence presented a high impact on disability. Prevention strategies to tackle disability should target the main contributors to the disability burden and the most disabling conditions/disease pairs, especially in the clinical practice.
