Relationships Among Stimulability Testing, Patient Factors, and Voice Therapy Compliance
Voice stimulability testing to determine voice therapy efficacy and prognosis is commonly used during the voice evaluation, but little is known about how patient factors (eg, voice diagnosis, dysphonia severity) can influence stimulability outcomes. The predictability of voice therapy success with different stimulability facilitating techniques (eg, hums, pitch glides) is also unknown. The goals of this study were to identify relationships between patient factors, voice therapy compliance, and stimulability testing. (Source: Journal of Voice)

Dysphonia in Pediatric Professional Voice Users: Is It Just Nodules?
Professional voice users of any age are often concerned about nodules, particularly in pediatric singers. However, an accurate diagnosis allows formulation of an optimal management plan and a successful continuation of these young patients ’ careers. There is very little literature regarding pediatric professional singers; we aimed to share our experience of over a decade of referrals to our tertiary pediatric voice clinic. Reliability of Phonemically Loaded Sentences in Spanish for Identifying Laryngeal Dystonia by Non-Spanish Speaking Speech-Language Pathologists
Laryngeal dystonia (LD) is a focal dystonia affecting the intrinsic laryngeal muscles. Clinical diagnosis requires subjective evaluation by experienced clinicians and is primarily based on auditory-perceptual assessment. Several speech tasks are widely accepted to elicit diagnosis specific auditory-perceptual symptoms of glottal stops in adductor LD or breathy breaks in abductor LD in spoken English. With the growing Spanish speaking population in the US and lack of Spanish speech tasks to assist in identifying LD in Spanish speaking subjects, assessing the reliability of phonemically loaded sentences in Spanish for use by...

Influence of vowels on note pitching in a cappella vocal quartet performance
This paper notes that accurate tuning in a cappella (unaccompanied) choral music is a two-step process requiring (1) making pitch shifts on individual notes to sing intervals in just intonation thereby providing beat-free tuning for the consonant musical intervals that underpin the underlying harmony and (2) tuning different vowels to account for any additional pitch changes that are made in the context of the intrinsic pitch relating to the specific vowel being produced. This paper explores the second of these in the context of a part-by-part vowel variation during a sustained chord sung by the other three parts by a quar...

Breathy Voice as a Compensatory Strategy for Essential Vocal Tremor: A Single Case Experiment Across Participants
Essential vocal tremor (EVT) manifests as nearly rhythmic modulations of fundamental frequency (fo) and intensity and causes a shaky voice. Although research on behavioral therapy for EVT is limited, previous studies have shown that a breathy voice reduces the perception of simulated EVT and might be an effective compensatory strategy. The current study aimed to measure the acoustical and perceptual effects of a breathy voice strategy in speakers with EVT. (Source: Journal of Voice)

Angles of Needle Insertion for True Vocal Fold Access Via the Thyrohyoid and Cricothyroid Membranes of the Larynx
This study aims to provide an analysis of the cricothyroid and thyrohyoid membrane approaches for laryngeal injections in cadaveric vocal cords. The primary objective is to determine the optimal techniques, needle trajectories, and anatomical landmarks for accessing different regions of the vocal cords percutaneously. Prevalence of Benign Vocal Fold Lesions: Long-Term Results From a Single European Institution
Hoarseness and limited voice capacity are often associated with benign vocal fold (VF) lesions. Despite their high clinical prevalence, epidemiological investigations focusing on these structural alterations are rare. The aim of the study was to present current European data on five typical lesion types (VF nodules, polyp, cyst, contact granuloma, Reinke ´s edema). (Source: Journal of Voice)

Estimating Formant Frequencies of Vowels Sung by Sopranos Using Weighted Linear Prediction
This study introduces the weighted linear prediction adapted to high-pitched singing voices (WLP-HPSV) method for accurately estimating formant frequencies of vowels sung by lyric sopranos. The WLP-HPSV method employs a variant of the WLP analysis combined with the zero-frequency filtering (ZFF) technique to address specific challenges in formant estimation from singing signals. Evaluation of the WLP-HPSV method compared to the LPC method demonstrated its superior performance in accurately capturing the spectral characteristics of synthetic /u/ vowels and the /a/ and /u/ natural singing vowels. Tracheoesophageal Voice Therapy in Postlaryngectomy Rehabilitation: A Systematic Review
Following total laryngectomy, surgical voice restoration is considered the optimal modality for re-establishing communication via tracheoesophageal voice. Yet beyond the insertion of a voice prosthesis to elicit voice production, there is suboptimal clinical knowledge of how to rehabilitate the perceptual quality of tracheoesophageal voice. This systematic review will identify and critically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of therapeutic interventions for tracheoesophageal voice. The findings of this review will inform the development of a novel tracheoesophageal voice therapy intervention. (Source: Journal of Voice)
