Development and initial validation of the work and human needs inventory
Publication date: Available online 18 April 2019Source: Journal of Vocational BehaviorAuthor(s): Alec J. Eshelman, Patrick J. RottinghausAbstractRecent theoretical approaches in vocational psychology, such as the Psychology of Working (Blustein, 2006; Duffy, Blustein, Diemer, & Autin, 2016), have emphasized the extent to which work meets a variety of human needs, and quantitative assessments of these constructs are needed to advance this research. The current study examines the development and initial validation of the Work and Human Needs Inventory (WAHNI), which assesses the extent to which individuals' work meets severa...

From entrepreneurial intentions to behavior: The role of anticipated regret and proactive personality
Publication date: Available online 10 April 2019Source: Journal of Vocational BehaviorAuthor(s): Brownhilder Ngek NenehAbstractEntrepreneurship is generally viewed as an intentionally planned behavior. As such, the formation of entrepreneurial intentions is often considered as an important step in the process of starting a new business. However, evidence suggests that not all intentions always translate to actual behavior which can be due to several contingent factors. Thus, drawing from the regret regulation theory and the proactive personality theory, the present study proposed two forward-looking factors (i.e. anticipat...

A meta-analysis of the relations between personality and workplace deviance: Big Five versus HEXACO
We present a comprehensive meta-analysis of the relations between personality and workplace deviance. More specifically, we compared the validities of the Big Five domains with those of the HEXACO domains for predicting workplace deviance. We found that HEXACO Honesty-Humility shows the strongest relation with workplace deviance, followed by Conscientiousness (Big Five and HEXACO) and Agreeableness (Big Five and HEXACO). Big Five Neuroticism (positively) and HEXACO Emotionality (negatively) also correlate with workplace deviance. However, HEXACO and Big Five Openness to Experience and Extraversion do not contribute substan...

Cultural value orientations and work–family conflict: The mediating role of work and family demands
Publication date: Available online 4 April 2019Source: Journal of Vocational BehaviorAuthor(s): Aline D. Masuda, Florencia M. Sortheix, Barbara Beham, Loren J. NaidooAbstractThe current paper examined the associations between Schwartz's (2006) cultural value orientations and individuals' work-family conflict. Results of multilevel analyses across 19 European countries (N = 16,145) showed that the cultural value orientation of embeddedness vs. autonomy, hierarchy vs. egalitarianism, and mastery vs. harmony were related to individuals' higher levels of family-to-work conflict (FWC). Embeddedness vs. autonomy was positive...

Career construction in social exchange: a dual-path model linking career adaptability to turnover intention
In this study we attempt to address this gap by developing a dual-path moderated mediation model based on career construction theory, social exchange theory and trait activation theory. Specifically, we propose two mediators - career satisfaction and perceived organizational support (POS) - to explain the negative effect of career adaptability on turnover intention. Moreover, following the trait activation perspective, we propose that organizational brands, including symbolic and instrumental brands, could separately moderate these two mediation paths. We collected multi-source data among a sample of 1013 employees and 200...

Organizational justice enactment: An agent-focused review and path forward
Publication date: Available online 29 March 2019Source: Journal of Vocational BehaviorAuthor(s): Maja Graso, Jeroen Camps, Nicole Schulz, Lieven BrebelsAbstractJustice enactment reflects the extent to which agents (e.g., supervisors, decision-makers, and others with power to treat others fairly) adhere to or violate justice rules. Despite the soaring interest that this vantage point has received in recent years, the justice literature focusing on the agent has remained rather fragmented. Further, this literature lacks a framework that integrates the recent empirical work, captures the current state of the field, and propos...

Applying the social cognitive model of career self-management to the entrepreneurial career decision: The role of exploratory and coping adaptive behaviours
In this study, the social cognitive model of career self-management (Lent & Brown, 2013) was applied to study the degree of decidedness of university students for an entrepreneurial career, including adaptive behaviours of individuals in their career management. The participants were 376 final-year students of business-oriented degree courses at the University of Granada (Spain). Based on longitudinal survey data, the model was tested with structural equation models. Empirical analysis corroborated the hypothesised relationships between the core cognitive-person variables of social cognitive career theory (self-efficacy, o...

Age and career commitment: Meta-analytic tests of competing linear versus curvilinear relationships
Publication date: Available online 15 March 2019Source: Journal of Vocational BehaviorAuthor(s): Ian M. Katz, Cort W. Rudolph, Hannes ZacherAbstractCareer commitment refers to individuals' dedication to their career, profession, or occupation, and has been studied for nearly four decades. Over time, multiple definitions and operationalizations of career commitment have emerged within the literature, making direct comparisons across primary studies difficult. Likewise, mixed findings with respect to the relationship between age and career commitment can be found across studies. To address these issues, we present the result...

Publication date: Available online 15 March 2019Source: Journal of Vocational BehaviorAuthor(s): Feng Guo, Simon Lloyd D. Restubog, Lin Cui, Bo Zhou, Yoona ChoiAbstractInstitutional support and pressure for academic researchers to engage with industry and business stakeholders have increasingly enabled and incentivized academics to embrace an entrepreneurial identity. Based on social identity theory, this study examines the mediated relationship among entrepreneur identification, role integration, and entrepreneurship performance of academics. We also propose that this mediated relationship is moderated by academic entrepr...

Predictors of a protean career orientation and vocational training enrollment in the post-school transition
Publication date: Available online 14 March 2019Source: Journal of Vocational BehaviorAuthor(s): Rebekka S. Steiner, Andreas Hirschi, Mo WangAbstractThe post-school transition is a critical transition for adolescents and understanding when and how it results in beneficial outcomes is a pressing issue. We integrate career construction theory and social cognitive career theory and investigate a sequential model of predictors and outcomes at various stages in the post-school transition process. We focus on a protean career orientation as an important subjective transition outcome and whether adolescents continue with high sch...
