The Association Between Frailty and Outcomes Following Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair
Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) is a less invasive method than the more physiologically stressful open surgical repair (OSR) for patients with anatomically appropriate abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Early postoperative outcomes are associated with both patients ’ physiologic reserve and the physiologic stresses of the surgical intervention. Among frail patients with reduced physiologic reserve, the stress of an aortic rupture in combination with the stress of an operative repair are less well tolerated, raising the risk of complications and mortality. Utility of Motor Evoked Potentials in Contemporary Open Thoracoabdominal Aortic Repair
Paraplegia remains one of the major complications of contemporary open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair. Intraoperative motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) act as a surrogate measure for spinal cord homeostasis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of intraoperative neuromonitoring in contemporary TAAA repair and its association with postoperative spinal cord ischemia. An ex vivo study of infections of vascular grafts and endografts with scanning electron microscopy
Vascular graft and endograft infections (VGEIs) are complicated by high morbidity, mortality, and recurrence rates, notably due to biofilm formation on the graft surface, hardly dislodgeable by the sole anti-infectious treatment. The characteristics of this biofilm are still poorly documented. The aim of this study was to evaluate ex vivo biofilm on removed infected vascular grafts and endografts (VGEs). Comparison of Mortality and Amputation after Lower Extremity Bypass vs. Peripheral Vascular Intervention in Patients with Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia and Comorbid Chronic Kidney Disease
Comorbid chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with worse outcomes for patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). However, comparative effectiveness data is limited for lower extremity bypass (LEB) vs. peripheral vascular intervention (PVI) in patients with CLTI and CKD. We aimed to evaluate 1) 30-day all-cause mortality and amputation and 2) 5-year all-cause mortality and amputation for LEB vs. PVI in patients with comorbid CKD. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

Living in High-Poverty Areas is Associated with Reduced Survival in Patients with Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm
In this retrospective observational study of 575 patients with TAAAs, mortality was significantly increased in patients living in high-poverty areas and reduced if living over 100 miles from the treatment center. Patients living in high-poverty areas may require more comprehensive medical care. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

Analysis Of Oklahoma Amputation Trends and Identification of Risk Factors to Target Areas For Limb Preservation Interventions
Using Oklahoma ’s hospital discharge data, the lower limb amputation rate was found to have nearly doubled in 12 years. Factors significantly associated with amputation include American Indian and Black race, unmarried social status, no insurance, and geography. There is an urgent need to implement limb preserva tion programs in Oklahoma. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

Center-level Outcomes Following Elective Fenestrated Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair in the Vascular Quality Initiative Database
This retrospective review of a prospectively collected vascular surgery registry found that hospital volume does not impact risk-adjusted perioperative mortality for complex branched and fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair. The authors conclude that these procedures may not require the same center volume benchmarks as open surgical repair. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

Post hoc analysis of the SuperB and Zilverpass trials for treatment of long and complex superficial femoral artery lesions
In two randomized controlled trials, the outcomes of endovascular treatment of complex femoropopliteal arterial lesions were compared with bypass surgery and considered a valid alternative treatment. The aim of this study was to compare both endovascular treatment options with the hypothesis that implantation of heparin-bonded self-expanding covered stents (Viabahn, SECS) or drug-eluting stents (ZilverPTX, DES) are related to similar clinical outcomes at one-year follow-up.
