Nephrologist-performed point-of-care venous excess Doppler ultrasound (VExUS) in the management of acute kidney injury
AbstractAcute kidney injury (AKI) is frequently associated with alterations in fluid balance making accurate assessment of hemodynamics a vital component of patient management. Unfortunately, conventional parameters such as history, physical examination, vital signs, weight, natriuretic peptides have limitations in this regard. Point of care ultrasonography (POCUS) is a clinician-performed limited ultrasound study intended to answer focused clinical questions at the bedside. In the past several years, it has evolved as an extension of physical examination in various medical specialties. Herein, we describe a case of AKI wh...

A necrotising fasciitis: case report
AbstractNecrotizing fasciitis is one of the most common soft tissue infections, with a high risk of major amputation and a mortality ranging from 6 to 33% which has not changed in the past 20 years. Early surgical resection of necrotic tissue plays a key role in determining the prognosis. Nawijn et al. identified an optimal 6 hours window from presentation to surgery. Symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis mimic those of common skin infections, such as erysipelas and cellulitis, making rapid surgical management difficult. In this context, the aid of point-of-care-ultrasound is a valuable tool for early diagnosis, detecting the ...

Adhesive capsulitis after COVID-19 vaccine injection: a peculiar case treated with combined bursa distention and glenohumeral capsular hydrodilatation
AbstractFrozen shoulder is a common and self-limiting condition affecting the soft tissues of the shoulders, characterized by severe pain, impaired range of motion (ROM) and limitation of daily activities. Its prevalence is 5% and it occurs most commonly in the fifth and sixth decades of life; women are more affected [DePalma in Clin Orthop Relat Res 466:552 –560, 2008]. It can be idiopathic or associated with other conditions such as metabolic disorders, diabetes, thyroid diseases, prolonged immobilization, trauma [DePalma in Clin Orthop Relat Res 466:552–560, 2008], or complications after vaccine administration known...

The role of Lung Ultrasound in the diagnosis of SARS-COV-2 disease in pregnant women
DiscussionLUS can affect the clinical decision course and can help in stratifying patients according to its findings. The lack of ionizing radiation and its repeatability makes it a reliable diagnostic tool in the management of pregnant women. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound)

Spontaneous regression of lymphovascular invasion and metastasis of malignant melanoma: ultrasound findings
This report presents a case of malignant melanoma in a 40-year-old male who underwent resection of the tumor in his right ankle. Eleven months after the resection, a subcutaneous mass was observed on his right femur. Ultrasound examination revealed a hypoechoic tubular structure in the right thigh, with a small amount of blood flow in the lesion. Using ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration, the patient was diagnosed with metastasis and lymphovascular invasion of malignant melanoma. Treatment with an immune checkpoint inhibitor was originally scheduled, but the lesion disappeared spontaneously after the fine-needle aspirati...

Color Doppler Eye Ultrasonography in giant cell arteritis: differential diagnosis between arteritic and non-arteritic sudden blindness
ConclusionOur preliminary data displayed a good reliability of CDEUS in distinguishing between arteritic and non-arteritic CRAO, while no difference was assessed between arteritic and non-arteritic AION. Since AION represents the most common presentation of cranial GCA, CDEUS does not seem a reliable procedure in the diagnostic work-up of GCA and should be restricted only to the exclusion of thrombo-embolic occlusions within the territory of central retinal artery. First trimester lower abdominal cysts as early predictor of anorectal malformations
ConclusionsThe finding of a lower abdomen cyst during the first trimester of pregnancy could be an early predictive sign of ARM, even if it disappears during pregnancy. In these cases, we suggest mentioning to the parents the possibility of an ARM during the counseling and to refer the couple to a Colorectal Center.Graphical Abstract (Source: Journal of Ultrasound)
