Associations among child abuse history, deployment ‐related traumatic events, mental disorders, and suicidal behaviors in Canadian Regular Force personnel
AbstractIncreasing attention has been focused on suicidal behavior among military personnel. Exposure to deployment-related traumatic events (DRTEs) and child abuse (CA) both have been associated with mental disorders and suicidal behaviors among military personnel. Thus, the primary objectives of this study were to examine (a) sex differences in CA history and DRTEs, past-year mental disorders, and past-year suicide-related outcomes and (b) independent, cumulative, and interactive effects of CA history and DRTEs on past-year mental disorders and suicide outcomes among Canadian military personnel. Data were from the repres...

Associations between posttraumatic stress symptoms and abuse experiences in child and adolescent girls from a Central African country
AbstractPosttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is frequently reported among survivors of abuse. However, there is a paucity of research examining the association between PTSD and abuse, including polyvictimization, in nonconflict areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We aimed to investigate the prevalence and correlates of PTSD among girls in nonconflict zones who experienced at least one type of abuse. Participants in this cross-sectional study were 3,011 middle-school girls, aged 11 –18 years, who attended randomly selected schools and completed questionnaires. The probable PTSD prevalence was 67.5%. The rate ...

Therapist perceptions of treating posttraumatic stress disorder in pregnancy: The VIP Study
AbstractThere is no consensus on the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during pregnancy, and therapists ’ views on the matter are largely unknown. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore therapist beliefs and experiences regarding PTSD treatment during pregnancy. Participants were therapists (N = 301) with experience treating PTSD who completed an online survey. The primary outcome measure was the percentage of therapists who were experienced in treating PTSD symptoms during pregnancy; secondary outcome measures assessed preferred treatments for the general and pregnant populations, perceived reluctan...

Using electronic medical record diagnostic codes to identify veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder
This study evaluated the performance of algorithms for defining PTSD based onInternational Classification of Diseases (ICD) code use within EMR data. We used data from a registry of U.S. veterans for whom both structured interview data and Veterans Health Administration EMR data were available. Using interview-diagnosed PTSD as the reference criterion, we calculated diagnostic accuracy statistics for algorithms that required the presence of at least one and up to seven encounters in which a PTSD diagnosis was present in EMR data within any clinical source, mental health clinic, or specialty PTSD clinic. We evaluated algori...

Measuring clinician stuck points about trauma ‐focused cognitive behavior therapy: The TF‐CBT Stuck Points Questionnaire
This study evaluated an instrument of clinician concerns about TF-CBT, the TF-CBT Therapist Stuck Points questionnaire, in a sample of community mental health clinicians training in a year-long TF-CBT community-based learning collaborative. The 26 items in the instruments, which aim to assess clinician views on child trauma treatment and TF-CBT, indicate preliminary psychometric support (i.e., item-total correlations, internal consistency, negative correlations with measures of attitudes towards evidence-based practice). Scores on the TF-CBT Therapist Stuck Points questionnaire revealed that, on average, clinicians express...

The ins and outs of posttraumatic growth in children and adolescents: A systematic review of factors that matter
AbstractPosttraumatic growth (PTG) refers to a positive psychological change that occurs following a seismic and highly challenging life circumstance. An individual who experiences PTG reports posttrauma development that surpasses their baseline level of pretrauma function in various domains. The present systematic review of the current literature aimed to explore factors related to the development of PTG in children and adolescents exposed to trauma. Included studies investigated a range of factors that impact PTG development in youth from five countries: the United States, Israel, China, Japan, and Norway. Studies addres...

Associations between therapist factors and treatment efficacy in randomized controlled trials of trauma ‐focused cognitive behavioral therapy for children and youth: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
AbstractPrevious research suggests that the effect of therapist factors on patient outcomes is significant. Yet, to date, no reviews have explored the potential effects of therapist characteristics on treatment outcomes for children and youth with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize the professional characteristics of trial therapists delivering trauma-focused cognitive behavioral interventions (TF-CBT) for child PTSD in clinical trials and understand the association between treatment efficacy and therapist factors. Systematic searches for randomized controlled ...

Psychological comorbidity: Predictors of residential treatment response among U.S. service members with posttraumatic stress disorder
This study examined predictors of treatment response among 282 male service members who received treatment in a U.S. Department of Defense residential PTSD program. Using established criteria, service members were classified as improved, indeterminate (referent), or worsened in terms of self-reported PTSD symptoms. Multinomial logistic regression results showed that for PTSD symptoms, higher levels of pretreatment PTSD symptom severity were associated with significantly lower odds of being in the improved group, adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.955,p = .018. In addition, service members who completed treatment were significan...

Psychometric properties of the Spanish Child PTSD Symptom Scale for DSM ‐5–Self‐Report in El Salvador
AbstractConducting research in global applied settings necessitates the use of easily administered, brief, and evidentiary measures. One widely used, brief self-report measure of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in children and adolescents is the Child PTSD Symptom Scale forDSM-5 –Self-Report (CPSS-5-SR). The present study examined the factor structure, measurement invariance, reliability, and convergent validity of the Spanish translation of the CPSS-5-SR in a sample of 1,296 third- through 12th-graders in El Salvador (Mage = 12.73 years,SD = 2.67, 55.2% female, 100.0% Latinx). This sample was collected as ...

Chronicity of posttraumatic stress disorder and comorbid pain as predictors of treatment response for trauma ‐affected refugees
AbstractPredictors of treatment outcomes have received limited attention in the field of trauma-affected refugees. Symptom chronicity is potentially a particularly relevant predictor, as it would instruct earlier interventions for a population less familiar with psychiatric treatment options, and its identification may also reduce or delay the onset of comorbidities, such as chronic pain. Accordingly, this study examined the impacts of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) chronicity and baseline comorbid pain on treatment response in trauma-affected refugees. Multiple regression was used to analyze data from a randomized c...

The associations between posttraumatic stress disorder and delay discounting, future orientation, and reward availability: A behavioral economic model
AbstractThe theoretical framework of behavioral economics, a metatheory that integrates operant learning and economic theory, has only recently been applied to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A behavioral economic theory of PTSD reflects an expansion of prior behavioral conceptualization of PTSD, which described PTSD in terms of respondent and operant conditioning. In the behavioral economic framework of PTSD, negatively reinforced avoidance behavior is overvalued, in part due to deficits in environmental reward, and may be conceptualized as a form ofreinforcer pathology (i.e., excessive preference for and valuation ...

Occupational posttraumatic stress disorder and workplace violence in workers ’ compensation claims
This study aimed to quantify the prevalence of PTSD caused by workplace violence (WPV) in a statewide workers ’ compensation system and compare the outcomes and treatment of WPV cases versus those caused by other traumatic events. Using a retrospective cohort study design, workers who reported PTSD as the primary reason for a workers’ compensation claim and had no coexisting physical injuries were found in California during 2009–2018. A total of 3,772 PTSD cases were identified, 48.9% of which were attributed to WPV. Demographic risk factors associated with WPV PTSD included lower income, younger age, female gender, ...

Posttraumatic stress disorder –related anhedonia as a predictor of psychosocial functional impairment among United States veterans
This study used data from Waves 2 and 4 (n = 1,649) of the Veterans ’ After-Discharge Longitudinal Registry (Project VALOR), a longitudinal dataset of U.S. Army and Marine veterans. As measured using the Inventory of Psychosocial Functioning, Wave 4 psychosocial functioning was regressed on seven PTSD symptom factors at Wave 2 (i.e., intrusions, avoidance, negativ e affect, anhedonia, externalizing behaviors, anxious arousal, and dysphoric arousal) and potential Wave 2 confounds. The Anhedonia factor, β = .123, most strongly predicted later psychosocial functional impairment beyond the impact of other PTSD symptom facto...
