Wedge resection, segmentectomy, and lobectomy: oncologic outcomes based on extent of surgical resection for ≤2 cm stage IA non-small cell lung cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with inferior performance status or lower baseline pulmonary function are more likely to receive wedge resection for clinical stage IA NSCLC ≤2 cm in size. For these small tumors, lobectomy, segmentectomy, and wedge resection provide comparable oncologic outcomes.PMID:38617767 | PMC:PMC11009583 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1693 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Recent progress in radioactive seed implantation brachytherapy of non-small cell lung cancer: a narrative review
CONCLUSIONS: This review demonstrates that RSI-BT can be therapeutic in the treatment of both early and advanced NSCLC with manageable complications. There have also been reports on the combination of RSI-BT with other therapies, but more research is needed on the combination of RSI-BT with them.PMID:38617768 | PMC:PMC11009575 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1600 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Clinical use of macitentan in the treatment of connective tissue disease-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension
CONCLUSIONS: Exercise tolerance and cardiac function in patients with CTD-PAH were significantly improved after treatment with macitentan, which was well tolerated. Therefore, macitentan may be an effective and safe targeted drug for CTD-PAH.PMID:38617769 | PMC:PMC11009607 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-24-151 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Indwelling pleural catheter infection and colonisation: a clinical practice review
J Thorac Dis. 2024 Mar 29;16(3):2196-2204. doi: 10.21037/jtd-23-1761. Epub 2024 Mar 27.ABSTRACTIndwelling pleural catheters (IPCs) are used in the management of malignant pleural effusions, but they can become infected in 5.7% of cases. This review aims to provide a summary of the development of IPC infections and their microbiology, diagnosis and management. IPC infections can be deep, involving the pleural space, or superficial. The former are of greater clinical concern. Deep infection is associated with biofilm formation on the IPC surface and require longer courses of antibiotic treatment. Mortality from infections is...

Efficacy and safety analysis of immune checkpoint inhibitor rechallenge therapy in locally advanced and advanced non-small cell lung cancer: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: ICI rechallenge therapy beyond disease progression did not improve clinical outcomes in patients with NSCLC, but no new safety signals emerged. However, patients with favorable response to initial ICIs treatment still showed significant efficacy of subsequent ICI rechallenge therapy.PMID:38617775 | PMC:PMC11009570 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1767 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Molecular characteristics and multivariate survival analysis of 43 patients with locally advanced or metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: NOTCH1, CBLB and TSC2 alterations were found to be potential indicators of poor prognosis in patients with ESCC. TMB was also positively correlated with the OS of ESCC patients, providing valuable insights for their treatment strategies.PMID:38617776 | PMC:PMC11009591 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1601 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Comparisons of short-term outcomes between robot-assisted, video-assisted, and open esophagectomy for resectable esophageal cancer after neoadjuvant treatment: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to VAMIE, no clear benefit exists for RAE in the treatment of resectable EC after neoadjuvant therapy. OE resulted in a longer hospital stay. Although the rate of successful right RLN node removal was higher with RAE, the clinical relevance for this is yet unclear.PMID:38617777 | PMC:PMC11009584 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-24-75 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Impact of lymph node dissection on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with postoperative recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer
CONCLUSIONS: IPTW-adjusted analysis indicated no difference in prognosis between patients with postoperative recurrence and those with advanced unresectable lung cancer. However, in patients with postoperative recurrence, the extent of LND was a significant predictor of ICI-PFS. These findings suggest that systematic LND may reduce the efficacy of ICI, indicating that preoperative ICI administration may be warranted.PMID:38617781 | PMC:PMC11009588 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1806 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)
