Development of Tissue Doppler derived predictors of hemodynamically Significant Patent Ductus Arteriosus and the ability to incorporate it in Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography protocol
ConclusionThis study concludes that septal S’ can be reliably used even by neonatologists for pre-symptomatic detection of HS PDA. This may also indicate the need of adding Tissue Doppler parameters to the standard protocol of Targeted neonatal Echocardiography. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

Fat volume measurements as a predictor of image noise in coronary computed tomography angiography
ConclusionsFat volume measurements of the chest wall can predict CCTA image noise better than other patient-specific predictors, such as BW and BMI. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

Two-dimensional speckle-tracking assessment of left and right ventricular function in rheumatoid arthritis patients with and without disease activity
ConclusionDisease activity in patients with RA is associated with lower left and right ventricular function. Disease activity scores can predict subclinical left and right ventricular dysfunction. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

Spectrum of morphological abnormalities and treatment outcomes in ostium secundum type of atrial septal defects: Single center experience in >500 cases
ConclusionTCC offered a success rate of 91% in complex defects after TEE selection. Very large size and deficient inferior, posterior rims predicted failure of TCC. Surgery offered 100% success and it involved a longer hospital and ICU stay. The long-term clinical results were identical with both treatment modalities. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) quality
ConclusionThe use of 256-raw CCTA and the determination of the acquisition protocol based on the assessment of the non-enhanced CT scan, prompts better image quality and a significant radiation exposure reduction. We recommend performing this analysis to guide the selection of the CCTA scan protocol. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

Visual versus fully automated assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction
ConclusionThe two-dimensional echocardiographic methods using Biplane Auto-EF or visual assessment were significantly comparable, whereas M-mode results in an overestimation of the LV ejection fraction. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

Circannual variations in the international normalized ratio (INR) among mechanical heart valve surgery patients on life-long warfarin
ConclusionTo the best of our knowledge. This is the first study in the Middle-East extending European and North-American data on circannual changes in INR. Our results confirm the existence of such a rhythm; however the mechanism is unknown. Our findings recognize winter as a challenging season for maintaining optimum anti-coagulation, possibly requiring higher number of outpatient visits and INR determinations, with implications for health care costs.
