An Unexpected Complication of Robotic Cardiac Surgery: Pneumomediastinum
In conclusion, although it is a very rare condition, pneumomediastinum should be kept in mind as a complication of robotic cardiac surgery. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

Left circumflex artery injury postmitral valve surgery, single center experience
Publication date: Available online 31 December 2018Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart AssociationAuthor(s): Aysha Husain, Aly Alsanei, Mohammed Tahir, Ziad Dahdouh, Zohair AlHalees, Ali AlMasoodAbstractThe left circumflex (LCX) artery is located close to the mitral valve (MV), making it susceptible to injury during MV surgery. We are reporting our experience in the diagnosis and management of this complication. We retrospectively reviewed our surgical and coronary angiography databases for patients with documented LCX artery injury during MV surgery between January 2000 and December 2016. The complication was associated wi...

Physicians’ Knowledge and Practice Attitudes Toward Infective Endocarditis Antibiotic Prophylaxis Guidelines in Saudi Arabia
ConclusionThe Knowledge about antibiotics prophylaxis of infective endocarditis in various cardiac lesions was less than optimal. Even in the presence of knowledge, there is a practice to knowledge discrepancy with an over-prescribing attitude for low risk cardiac lesions that correlates significantly with more knowledgeable physicians. We recommend that physicians be up-to-date and follow the most recent guidelines. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

Palliative emergency stenting of the vertical vein in obstructive supracardiac pulmonary venous drainage prior to surgical repair
We report two very sick patients who were referred to our cardiac center for intervention to relieve vertical vein (VV) obstruction. Due to hemodynamic instability and associated morbidity, the decision in our combined meeting is to go for interventional cardiac catheterization. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

2-D speckle-tracking assessment of left and right ventricular function in rheumatoid arthritis patients with and without disease activity
ConclusionDisease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is associated with lower left and right ventricular function. Disease activity scores can predict subclinical left and right ventricular dysfunction. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)

Development of tissue Doppler-derived predictors of hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus and the ability to incorporate it in targeted neonatal echocardiography protocol
ConclusionThis study concludes that septal S′ can be reliably used even by neonatologists for pre-symptomatic detection of HS PDA. This may also indicate the need of adding tissue Doppler parameters to the standard protocol of targeted neonatal echocardiography. (Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart Association)
