Characterization, mechanical properties, corrosion behavior and bone-like apatite formation ability of fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite coating
In this study, fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite (FHA) coatings were prepared on Ti-6Al-4V surfaces by plasma spraying method using a mixture of calcium fluoride and hydroxyapatite powders. The prepared coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy at different levels of calcium fluoride (3 wt%, 6 wt%, 9 wt%, and 12 wt%). The biocompatibility of the coatings was evaluated by in vitro mineralization experiments. Experimental results showed that at 9 wt% of calcium fluoride, the prepared FHA coatings had better mechanical properties, with improved bond strength (28.2 MP...

Quantifying the immediate post-implantation strain field of cadaveric tibiae implanted with cementless tibial trays: A time-elapsed micro-CT and digital volume correlation analysis during stair descent
This study employed digital volume correlation (DVC) to quantify the immediate post-implantation strain field of five cadaveric tibiae implanted with a commercially available cementless titanium tibial tray (Attune, DePuy Synthes). The tibiae were subjected to a five-step loading sequence (0-2.5 bodyweight, BW) replicating stair descent, with concomitant time-elapsed micro-CT imaging. With progressive loads, increased compression of trabecular bone was quantified, with the highest strains directly under the posterior region of the tibial tray implant, dissipating with increasing distance from the bone-implant interface. Af...

Numerical design of open-porous titanium scaffolds for Powder Bed Fusion using Laser Beam (PBF-LB)
J Mech Behav Biomed Mater. 2023 Dec 29;151:106359. doi: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2023.106359. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe paper concerns the numerical design of novel three-dimensional titanium scaffolds with complex open-porous structures and desired mechanical properties for the Powder Bed Fusion using Laser Beam (PBF-LB). The 60 structures with a broad range of porosity (38-78%), strut diameters (0.70-1.15 mm), and coefficients of pore volume variation, CV(Vp), 0.35-5.35, were designed using the Laguerre-Voronoi tessellations (LVT). Their Young's moduli and Poisson's ratios were calculated using Finite Element Model (FEM) ...

Effect of different composite plates on the healing of femoral fractures
J Mech Behav Biomed Mater. 2023 Dec 28;151:106356. doi: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2023.106356. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this paper, the effects of different composite plates on the healing of femoral fractures were studied by numerical simulation. The healing model of femoral fracture was established by ABAQUS display solver. Based on the fuzzy logic theory, the process of callus differentiation at femoral fracture was considered under the joint action of biological variables and mechanical stimulation, and the healing process of femur was simulated. Compare the stress on the screw, concentration of callus bone and cartilage...

Er:YAG laser settings for debonding zirconia restorations: An in vitro study
J Mech Behav Biomed Mater. 2023 Dec 20;151:106331. doi: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2023.106331. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis in vitro study aimed to determine the optimal frequency and energy settings for debonding zirconia restorations using an erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser. A total of 200 zirconia specimens (5 mm × 5 mm × 1.5 mm) were fabricated from two types of materials: (1) 3 mol% yttria oxide stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (3Y-TZP) and (2) 5 mol% yttria oxide stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (5Y-TZP). The zirconia specimens were bonded to dentin using resin cement (Re...

Preparation of gastrodin modified P(VDF-TrFE)-Eudragit L100-AuNPs nanofiber membranes with piezoelectric property
In this study, we developed a novel gastrodin-loaded P(VDF-TrFE)-Eudragit L100-gold nanoparticles (Gas@PT-EL100-AuNPs) nanofiber membrane. Fabricated through electrospinning technique, this composite membrane aimed to investigate the impacts of gastrodin and AuNPs on its properties. Experimental results indicated that the incorporation of gold nanoparticles significantly reduced the fiber diameter of the membrane and enhanced the overall performance by improving hydrophilicity and piezoelectric properties. Specifically, the addition of AuNPs substantially enhanced the piezoelectric performance of the nanofiber membrane. Fu...

Three-dimensional theoretical model for effectively describing the effect of craniomaxillofacial structural factors on loading situation in the temporomandibular joint
CONCLUSIONS: A negative correlation was observed between the joint load and α. Among the three types of asymmetric deformities, occlusal deviations were the primary factors leading to TMD. Unilateral occlusion can result in a greater load on the ipsilateral joint and should be avoided when using the side corresponding to the TMD. This study provides a theoretical basis for the biomechanical mechanism of TMD and also enables the targeted mitigation and treatment of TMD through structural modification.PMID:38176197 | DOI:10.1016/j.jmbbm.2024.106371 (Source: Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials)

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater. 2024 Jan 1;151:106366. doi: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2023.106366. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIodine-containing coatings were prepared on pure Ti surfaces via electrochemical deposition to enhance their antibacterial properties. The factors influencing iodine content were analyzed using an orthogonal experiment. The electrochemically deposited samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their antibacterial properties and cytotoxicity were evaluated. The results showed that changing the deposition time is an e...

Effect of porcelain veneering technique in bilayered zirconia on bond strength and residual stress distribution
J Mech Behav Biomed Mater. 2023 Dec 29;151:106361. doi: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2023.106361. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of all porcelain materials in dentistry has significantly increased in recent years. However, chipping has remained a common problem that affects bilayered zirconia restorations. Bonding between porcelain and the underlying zirconia framework is crucial to the success of the restoration. The bond strength may be affected by such factors as residual thermal stress and the veneering technique. This research focuses on investigating the potential and constraints of materials through an examination of the ...
