Proposal of a Clinical Endpoint for Periodontal Trials: The Treat-to-Target Approach.
Authors: Feres M, Retamal-Valdes B, Faveri M, Duarte P, Shibli J, Soares GMS, Miranda T, Teles F, Goodson M, Hasturk H, Van Dyke T, Ehmke B, Eickholz P, Schlagenhauf U, Meyle J, Koch R, Kocher T, Hoffmann T, Kim TS, Kaner D, Figueiredo LC, Doyle H Abstract OBJECTIVE: The selection of proper outcome measures is a critical step in clinical research. Most randomized clinical trials (RCTs) assessing the effects of initial anti-infective periodontal therapies use surrogate outcomes as primary outcome variables, such as mean changes in probing depth (PD) or in clinical attachment. However, these parameters do not reflect...

The Association between Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Periodontal Conditions: Is There a Common Bacterial Etiology?
CONCLUSION: A number of studies have showed an association between PD and IBD. Both diseases share genetic and environmental etiological factors. The precise role of intestinal bacteria remains vague. The periodontal microbiota that might be involved in the association of these diseases are Fusobacterium nucleatum, Campylobacter rectus and Campylobacter concisus. Fungal and viral microbiota dysbiosis should also be evaluated as common pathogenic pathways in IBD and periodontal disease. Comparative Clinical Evaluation between Conventional Periodontal Treatment and Full Mouth Disinfection.
Authors: Pontillo V, Miziak DB, Maller ACPA, Nassar PO, Nassar CA Abstract Periodontal disease is chronic and multifactorial, affecting protection and support tissues of the tooth. Its onset is due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque, in which are found microorganisms, mainly Gram-negative, which stimulate the host cells and the production of immune-inflammatory molecules. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of two techniques of periodontal treatment through clinical parameters and laboratory tests. For this, 42 patients were randomly evaluated and divided into three groups of...

The Potential Role of Curcumin in Periodontal Therapy: A Review of the Literature.
Authors: Livada R, Shiloah J, Tipton DA, Dabbous MK Abstract Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease in the oral cavity caused by bacterial biofilm attached to tooth surfaces. The periodontal pathogenic microorganisms trigger the disease process; however, the destruction of the periodontium is mostly caused by the host's immune response to the bacterial insults. The main thrust of periodontal therapy has been centered traditionally on reducing the microbial load by mechanical and antimicrobial means. This approach has been reported to be effective for the majority of patients and sites. However, modulating ...
