Diabetes Changes Symptoms Cluster Patterns in Persons Living With HIV
Approximately 10-15% of persons living with HIV (PLWH) have a comorbid diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM). Both of these long-term chronic conditions are associated with high rates of symptom burden. The purpose of our study was to describe symptom patterns for PLWH with DM (PLWH+DM) using a large secondary dataset. The prevalence, burden, and bothersomeness of symptoms reported by patients in routine clinic visits during 2015 were assessed using the 20-item HIV Symptom Index. Principal component analysis was used to identify symptom clusters. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

Integrating a statewide HIV call line: An innovative and tailored approach for rapid linkage to HIV care
Only 80% of people living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States are linked to care, 40% are engaged in care, and 30% have achieved viral load suppression. We addressed linkage to care with a pilot program of a statewide referral call center to connect PLWH and their non-HIV specialty providers to HIV care. Callers received tailored referrals from nurses trained to work in an existing call center, using an electronic assessment tool and a comprehensive HIV provider list. Of 122 calls, 85% were from PLWH and 15% from providers calling about a patient. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

Association Between Physical Activity, Depression, and Diabetes in Urban-Dwelling People Living with HIV
Physical activity (PA) may improve physical and mental health in people living with HIV (PLWH). However, the associations between PA participation and physical and mental health problems of PLWH in urban settings remain largely unknown. Our objective was to determine the relationships between PA and physical and mental health in urban-dwelling PLWH. There were 289 adult PLWH who responded to an electronic survey including questions on PA and current physical and mental health. The associations between physical and mental health and PA were investigated using linear and logistic regression. (Source: Journal of the Associati...

HIV status disclosure in the workplace: Positive and stigmatizing experiences of health care workers living with HIV
We explored workplace experiences of 10 health care providers with HIV in the Netherlands. We used semi-structured interviews to discuss motivations for disclosure and concealment, reactions to disclosures, the impact of reactions, and coping with negative reactions. Reasons for disclosure were wanting to share the secret, expecting positive responses, observing positive reactions to others, wanting to prevent negative reactions, and being advised to disclose. Reasons for concealment included fearing negative reactions, observing negative reactions, previous negative experiences, having been advised to conceal, and conside...

Impacts of longitudinal mentorship to strengthen the HIV workforce: Qualitative evidence of changes in clinicians ’ knowledge, attitudes, and practice
The Clinician Scholars Program at the Midwest AIDS Education and Training Center strengthens the workforce by increasing knowledge and skills related to HIV prevention and care. The 1-year individualized training program for minority-serving clinicians includes intensive mentoring and networking. Qualitative exit interviews (N = 50) conducted over 4 years demonstrate the effectiveness of the training, including changes at the individual and systems levels. Findings show that almost all graduates reported improvements in knowledge, two thirds reported changes in empathic capacity and cultural competence, and nearly three qu...

Understanding the “Why” for High-Risk Behavior: Adolescent Girls’ Motivations for Sex
This study identified motivations for sex in 738 girls enrolled in the Health Improvement Project for Teens (HIPTeens) randomized controlled trial and analyzed differences in sex motives among at-risk subgroups. Sexually active girls, ages 15-19 years, were recruited from urban community-based settings. Baseline data were collected via audio computer-assisted self-interview surveys including a modified Sex Motives Scale based on six domains (intimacy, enhancement, self-affirmation, coping, peer pressure, and partner approval), assessing drivers of both protecti ve and risk-promoting motivations. Leveraging Social Media to Explore Black Women's Perspectives on HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis
Despite a decline in new HIV diagnoses in the United States during the past decade, significant HIV-related disparities persist (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). Among the most marked HIV-related disparities in the United States has been the ongoing disproportionate representation of Black women in the numbers of U.S. women newly diagnosed with HIV infection (CDC, 2017). Specifically, while Black women comprise only 13% of the U.S. female population, Black women account for 61% of women with new HIV diagnoses (CDC, 2017). Social support in newly diagnosed people living with HIV: Expectations and satisfaction along time, predictors, and mental health correlates
Social support usually decreases following HIV diagnosis and decreased support is related to worsening mental health. We investigated the evolution of social support after HIV diagnosis and its relationship to anxiety, depression, and resilience, and sought to develop a social support prediction model. 119 newly diagnosed Spanish-speakers participated in this longitudinal study, completing measures of social support, internalized stigma, disclosure concerns, degree of disclosure, coping, anxiety, depression, and resilience.
