Complex problems, care demands, and quality of life among people living with HIV in the antiretroviral era in Indonesia
People living with HIV (PLWH) suffer from physical and psychological distress that palliative care could alleviate. Our cross-sectional study identified HIV-related problems and demands for palliative care at different disease stages, and their interactions with quality of life (QOL) in 215 PLWH from a referral hospital and an AIDS non-government organization in Indonesia. A brief survey of demographic information, the Bahasa version of Problems and Needs of Palliative Care, and the WHOQOL- HIV BREF (Cronbach ’s alpha = .89), were used for data collection. The effect of antiretroviral stock-outs on medication adherence among patients living with HIV in Ghana: A qualitative study
Stock-outs of medications for antiretroviral therapy have been reported as a significant barrier to HIV care in sub-Saharan Africa, but patient responses to these shortages have not been fully described. The aim of our study was to employ qualitative methods to examine the role of medication stock-outs in contributing to treatment interruption among a sample of patients already engaged in care for HIV at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana. A text messaging intervention to support Option B+ in Kenya: A qualitative study
Key challenges in providing lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART) to pregnant and breastfeeding women (Option B+) in sub-Saharan Africa include achieving long-term adherence and retention in care. One intervention that may help address these challenges is mobile text messaging. Black mothers living with HIV picture the social determinants of health
The purpose of our study was to explore the social determinants of health for Black mothers living with HIV in the Southeastern region of the United States. In this exploratory study, we used qualitative methods of in-depth interviewing and photo elicitation at 3 time points to provide a comprehensive examination of the meaning that the constructs held for participants (n = 18). The social determinants of health, identified primarily as positive health determinants by the participants, included social support, religion, animal companions, and the physical environment. HIV/STI prevention among heterosexually active Black adolescents with mental illnesses: Focus group findings for intervention development
Heterosexually active Black adolescents with mental illnesses are at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. However, few HIV/STI prevention interventions exist for this demographic. We held 7 focus groups (N = 33) to elucidate social, cultural, and psychological factors that influence HIV/STI risk-related sexual behaviors in this understudied population.
