Bilateral Symmetric Absence of Lumbricals of the Foot: A Rare Case Report
J Am Podiatr Med Assoc. 2023 Nov-Dec;113(6):22-188. doi: 10.7547/22-188.ABSTRACTVariations of the lumbricals of the foot are not common, unlike the lumbricals of the hand. Few cases of unilateral absence of lumbricals of the foot have been reported. There have been far fewer cases of bilateral asymmetric absence of the lumbricals of the foot reported. The study reports the findings observed during the routine dissection for undergraduate medical students in the Department of Anatomy. We observed that the third lumbrical in both the feet was absent in an elderly male cadaver. The other features of both feet were usual. Exte...

Cavus Foot in Soccer Players: Increased Prevalence in Experienced Players and Risk Factor for Injury
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified a high prevalence of cavus foot among soccer players of all ages, with an increased prevalence among higher-level players. The injury risk factors were female sex, older age, playing at a higher level, and cavus feet.PMID:38170614 | DOI:10.7547/21-095 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)

Case Review of Tibiotalocalcaneal Arthrodesis with Distal Femoral Locking Plate Through a Lateral Approach
CONCLUSIONS: Lateral locking plate fixation with a distal femoral locking plate system may be an alternative fixation option for tibiotalocalcaneal fusions in complex patients. However, a larger sample size with longer term follow-up is needed to make any significant recommendations on the use of this plating system.PMID:38170615 | DOI:10.7547/21-178 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)

The Rare Presence of an Asymptomatic Os Sustentaculum in a Young Athlete
We describe such an incident in a 16-year-old male athlete presenting for a recent ankle sprain with no other history of trauma or pain on the medial aspect of the ankle. The original computed tomographic scan reported a possible nonunion of a sustentaculum fracture, or peripherally corticated ossification in association with a possible talocalcaneal fibrocartilaginous coalition. Given no history of high-level trauma to the area, the clinical presentation, and the radiographic findings, the more likely diagnosis was confirmed to be an os sustentaculum. The goal of the authors of this article is to report such findings to r...

Cuboid Cobbles Hinder Elite Youth Football Player
We describe an elite youth football player who developed lateral foot pain of previously unknown origin. A thorough patient history and physical examination as well as an in-depth presentation of radiographic findings on Computed tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan were described. Through this combination, the puzzle was resolved and a rare peroneus longus tendinopathy due to bony spurs in the cuboid groove was diagnosed. A peroneus longus exploration, release and reduction of the cuboidal bone spurs was performed and intensive rehabilitation phase followed. The patient successfully returned to perfor...

5-Aminolevulinic Acid-Mediated Photodynamic Therapy on Wound Healing: A Systemic Review of Human Evidences
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review summarized the commonly used therapeutic parameters for ALA-PDT in the clinical treatment of skin wounds. After ALA-PDT alone or ALA-PDT combined with curettage, antibacterial and surgical treatment, all wounds healed well, and the adverse reactions were mainly mild to moderate pain, which could be relieved by cooling. ALA-PDT had proven to be a promising wound treatment modality through evidence of safety and efficacy.PMID:38133931 | DOI:10.7547/23-015 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)
