Standardized Multimodal Approach Reduced Opioid Use Following Bariatric Surgery: A Quality Improvement Initiative
Bariatric patients are at increased risk of opioid use disorder. There is a national effort to reduce opioid use after bariatric surgery. We instituted a standardized multimodal pain regimen to address this need. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

The Impact of Bariatric Surgery on the Development of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a common problem after bariatric surgery leading to abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea. However, little data exists on the prevalence or presenting symptoms of SIBO after BS. We sought to define the prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes of SIBO in a bariatric population by performing a retrospective cohort study. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

A National Review of Insurance Coverage of Noncancerous Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is commonly performed for many noncancerous indications, such as correction of congenital deformities, acquired tissue disease, burns, and trauma. However, breast reconstruction for noncancerous indications is often considered cosmetic or not explicitly mentioned in insurance policies. The goal of this study was to assess variability in insurance coverage of breast reconstruction for noncancerous indications. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Accurately Quantifying Breast Cancer Driven Extracellular Matrix Fiber Alignment in Primary Human Breast Tissue
Breast cancer progression involves increased alignment of extracellular matrix (ECM) fibers, which promotes metastasis and drug resistance. Quantifying fiber alignment is essential to studying ECM dysregulation and potential therapies. However, major technical hurdles exist in quantifying fiber alignment and statistically analyzing fiber alignment data. We developed methods to overcome these hurdles. Simplified Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventing Healing Approach (SLYMPHA) for the Prevention of Breast Cancer-related Lymphedema after Axillary Lymph Node Dissection
Lymphedema (LE) is a serious complication of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) with an incidence rate of 16%. Simplified Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventing Healing Approach (SLYMPHA) is a safe and relatively simple method, which decreases incidence of LE dramatically. Our initial study showed an 88% decrease in clinical LE rate. In the initial study, we used arm circumference measurement for the diagnosis of LE and median follow up was 15 months. The aim of this study was to confirm these results after a long-term follow up period and by using bioimpedance spectroscopy (L-Dex) technology in detecting LE. (Source: Journ...

The Use of DermACELL Acellular Dermal Matrix in Oncologic Breast Reconstruction: A Retrospective Cohort Study and Systematic Review of the Literature
Acellular dermal matrices (ADM) are commonly used in tissue expander and direct-to-implant reconstruction following mastectomy. Few studies have reported outcomes of DermACELL ADM or compared DermACELL to AlloDerm ADM. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes of DermACELL and AlloDerm in oncologic breast reconstruction and to review the literature reporting outcomes of patients undergoing reconstruction using DermACELL. Variations in Episode Spending for Breast Cancer Patients Undergoing Mastectomy: Results From a Statewide Value Collaborative
A growing body of literature supports centralizing complex cancer operations, such as pancreatectomy and esophagectomy, as higher volume centers may offer higher value care. Little is known about variation in spending for common cancer operations that remain decentralized, such as mastectomy. To identify opportunities for value enhancement for common operations, we sought to describe variations in episode spending for mastectomy, and potential patient and facility-level drivers of variation.
