Identifying Low-value Inpatient Hospitalizations Following Emergency Department Requests for Surgical Consultations
Inpatient surgical consultation is sometimes requested for complaints safe for outpatient evaluation and treatment. We hypothesized that exploring inpatient consultations requested within 48 hours of discharge would reveal opportunities to improve value through expedited outpatient follow-up and avoidance of potentially unnecessary hospitalizations. Narrowing the Rural Vs Urban Gap in Cancer Outcomes Using a Model of Academic-community Collaboration to Help Achieve Cancer Accreditation
Disparity in cancer outcomes are often geographic. Within a 29-county service area of Eastern North Carolina (ENC), overall cancer mortality is historically higher than the remaining 71 counties in NC. These findings prompted a call to action within a regional health care system to improve cancer outcomes. We strengthened our network using an Academic-Community Collaborative model, with an emphasis on regional cancer accreditation. Twelve community hospitals are now academic affiliated for cancer care, and over 50% of network hospitals are cancer (COC)-accredited with the American College of Surgeons. (Source: Journal of t...
