Nutrition in Children With Chronic Kidney Disease: How to Thrive?
The nutritional status and management of children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are complex and require a combined pediatric nephrology team work approach with physicians, nutritionists, nurses, and physical/occupational therapists. Prospective observational studies such as Children with CKD in the US, the 4C study in Europe and the International Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Network have advanced the field. However, most recommendations and guidelines from international task forces such as Kidney Diseases Improving Global Outcomes and Pediatric Renal Nutrition Taskforce are opinion-based rather than evidence-based. (S...

Nutrition in the management of kidney transplant recipients
Kidney transplantation offers patients with end stage kidney disease the best outcomes. Concentration on nutrition is pivotal throughout the transplant lifecourse. Nutritional requirements change during each phase of transplantation, from pre-transplant evaluation and wait-time, acute transplantation, maintenance and ultimately declining graft function, and care should be taken to consider each stage. In this article we concentrate on addressing each phase, with additional focus on current hot topics of dysglycaemia management and on the impact of diet on gut microbiome. Wisely Choosing a Fast-food Burger Meal results in Meaningful Reduction in Sodium: Implications for Kidney Stone Patients
Stone formers trying to limit dietary sodium may be unable to give up fast food. For the classic American hamburger, it is unclear if lower sodium preparations of this item are available and how this could affect sodium intake. We determined the impact of careful selection at national chains. (Source: Journal of Renal Nutrition)

Estimating Total Energy Expenditure to Determine Energy Requirements in Free-Living Children With Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease: Can a Structured Approach Help Improve Clinical Care?
Malnutrition and obesity are complex burdensome challenges in pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) management that can adversely affect growth, disease progression, wellbeing, and response to treatment. Total energy expenditure (TEE) and energy requirements in children are essential for growth outcomes but are poorly defined, leaving clinical practice varied and insecure. The aims of this study were to explore a practical approach to guide prescribed nutritional interventions, using measurements of TEE, physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE), and their relationship to kidney function. Gut Microbiota and Uremic Retention Solutes in Adults with Moderate CKD: A 6-Day Controlled Feeding Study
To determine serum and urine concentrations of the uremic retention solutes (URS), indoxyl sulfate (IS), p-cresol sulfate (PCS), and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), and gut microbiota composition in individuals with moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) compared with matched adults without CKD in a 6-day controlled feeding study.
