Annie, Annie! Are you Okay?: Death Masks, War and Simulation
In the late 19th century, a beautiful woman was said to have drowned in the River Seine and had a plaster death mask created to capture her beauty. Called L ’Inconnue de la Seine (The Unknown Woman of the Seine) and “La Joconde du suicide” (The Mona Lisa of Suicide), the image went on to inspire art, literature, and popular culture. Our current understanding of forensic pathology makes it highly unlikely that the cast of the Inconnue was actually taken from a deceased person. The death mask of the Inconnue lives on in modern medicine in the face of the Resusci Anne mannequin, which is used for Cardio-Pulmonary Resusc...

Robotic Surgery in Pediatric Urology
The da Vinci robot first entered human clinical trials in 1998 and was FDA approved shortly thereafter in 2000. The first reported pediatric robotic surgery was completed in 2002. Since that time, the number of robotic pediatric urology cases has steadily increased. The most commonly performed surgeries are robotic pyeloplasty and ureteral reimplantation. Robotic surgery has been shown to provide several benefits compared to open surgery including less pain, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery and improved cosmesis. Helicopters, Catheters and the Innovators that Used Them
Advances in the care of the neurogenic bladder is a success story of the latter half of the 20th and the early 21st century. At the termination of World War II it was recognized that the majority of patients with spinal cord injuries died within two years of injury, mostly due to urologic complications secondary to neurogenic bladder. Faced with caring for a large number of these patients at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire, England, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann introduced the first intermittent catheterization program. Regional Anesthesia for Pediatric Urologic Surgery – What’s New?
Urologic surgeries are amongst the most commonly performed surgeries in children. These procedures require effective pain management to ensure optimal postoperative outcomes and patient comfort. Although the use of regional anesthesia is commonplace among the adult perioperative population, the widespread application in children has lagged behind. In urology specifically, barriers to universal implementation have included lack of training for new ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, fear of unrecognized complications in anesthetized children and adverse surgical events related to the presence of local anesthetic in the surgical...

The Evolution of Guidelines for the Evaluation and Management of Urinary Tract Infections in Children: Can We Finally Agree?
Disorders of the kidneys were recognized in China (2500-3000 BC) with recommendations for the analysis of the pulse and urine and treatment with myrrh, herbs and acupuncture. The ancient Greeks described signs and symptoms of UTIs. Galen (Rome, 2nd Century) described UTIs associated with obstruction. There was little advancement in diagnosis or management for the next 1300 years until the 19th century brought recognition of the germ theory of disease. Highly toxic non-specific agents were used for treatment until the introduction of sulfanilamide in 1937. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Urology)

Treatments and Time: The Temporal Relationships in Medicine
The practice of surgery has adapted to conditions in the past century. Timely intervention with the acute abdomen and oncologic management has relied on early intervention to optimize outcomes. However, reconstructive surgery has harnessed temporal relationships of the healing process to achieve optimal outcomes. The historical relevance of the temporal aspects in surgery provides a paradigm for urologic reconstruction. The added dimension of care has led to the staging of surgeries that have widened the lens of intervention for both functional and aesthetic results. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Urology)

Brief History of Transgender Surgery
Transgenderism has likely existed since time immemorial as there is a reference in Deuteronomy (22:5) to the abomination of cross-dressing. In order for surgical treatment to evolve, transgenderism required definition (descriptive language), an understanding of the condition by patients and physicians, social and medical acceptance of treatment and surgical technology to afford reconstruction. Fertility Preservation in the Pediatric and Adolescent Patient
Fertility preservation in prepubertal and adolescent patients is a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of pediatric oncology, reproductive medicine and child psychology. Herein, we will discuss the importance and challenges of fertility preservation in these young populations, who may face potential loss of fertility due to cancer treatments or other health conditions. It addresses the various techniques currently available for fertility preservation, such as cryopreservation of testicular tissue, while analyzing the ethical considerations, psychological impact and the role of informed consent in these procedures. The Graying of a Pediatric Urologist: My 40 Years of Urologic Ultrasound
Five decades ago, ultrasound (US) and its 2-dimensional images, the original shades of gray pertinent to urologists, began to provide anatomic detail without exposure to ionizing radiation. Initially US was viewed as a preliminary and non-invasive survey that permitted the Urologist access to more diagnostic anatomic or functional imaging. Power doppler ultrasound, contrast enhanced imaging, tissue elasticity measurement, and continued progress in image processing across all frequencies, has made US the diagnostic procedure of choice for many genitourinary conditions.
