Lessons learned after 176 patients treated with a standardized procedure of thoracoscopic cryoanalgesia during minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum
Intrathoracic intercostal cryoanalgesia (Cryo) during minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) reports have been related to improved pain management, although its extent differs amongst studies. We aimed to report our experience using a standardized perioperative approach including Cryo during MIRPE, and compare our actual results with those of a previous thoracic epidural analgesia (TE) cohort. Lessons learned are summarized. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

The Impact of Biologic Therapies on Rate of Colectomy in Paediatric-onset Ulcerative Colitis - A Population-Based Cohort Study
Biologic therapies have been associated with reduced rate of colectomy in ulcerative colitis (UC) in adults, but data are limited in paediatric-onset UC. Our aim was to define the rate of colectomy in paediatric-onset UC, including post-transition into adult care, and to evaluate the impact of biologic therapies on rate of colectomy. A Prospective Observational Study of Preoperative Anaemia Management Aided by Bedside Haemoglobin Testers in a Low-Resource Setting
Paediatric-preoperative anaemia management is challenging in settings where clinical judgment is used to diagnose anaemia owing to a lack of timely, affordable preoperative haemoglobin testing. We analysed anaemia management in such a setting after the introduction of point-of-care bedside haemoglobin testers. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

Transcystic Laparoscopic Common Bile Duct Exploration for Pediatric Patients with Choledocholithiasis: A Multi-Center Study
Patients with choledocholithiasis are often treated with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) followed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Upfront LC, intraoperative cholangiogram (IOC), and possible transcystic laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) could potentially avoid the need for ERCP. We hypothesized that upfront LC+IOC +/- LCBDE will decrease length of stay (LOS) and the total number of interventions for children with suspected choledocholithiasis. Interfacility Transport of Children with Traumatic Pneumothorax: Does Elevation Make a Difference?
Traumatic pneumothorax (PTX) remains a source of significant morbidity and mortality in pediatric trauma patients. Management with tube thoracostomy is routinely dictated by symptoms, use of positive pressure ventilation, or plan for air transport. Many patients transferred to our pediatric trauma center (PTC) require transport at considerable elevation. We sought to characterize the effect of transport at elevation in this population to inform management recommendations. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)
