Health Care Transition for Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes: Stakeholder Engagement for Defining Optimal Outcomes
This study engaged multiple stakeholders (i.e., young adults with T1D, parents, pediatric and adult health care providers, and experts) in qualitative interviews to identify the content domain for developing a multidimensional measure of health care transition (HCT) outcomes. Results  The following constructs were identified for a planned measure of HCT outcomes: biomedical markers of T1D control; T1D knowledge/skills; navigation of a new health care system; integration of T1D into emerging adult roles; balance of parental involvement with autonomy; and “ownership” of T1D self-management.Discussion  The results can ...

Topical Review: Transitional Services for Teens and Young Adults With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Process Map and Proposed Model to Overcoming Barriers to Care

Assessment of Pain Anxiety, Pain Catastrophizing, and Fear of Pain in Children and Adolescents With Chronic Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
ConclusionSeven measures are available to assess pain anxiety, pain catastrophizing, and fear of pain in young people with chronic pain, and most are well established. We present implications for practice and directions for future research. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Psychology)

Health-Related Quality of Life in Pediatric Patients With Demyelinating Diseases: Relevance of Disability, Relapsing Presentation, and Fatigue
ConclusionsChildren with demyelinating diseases evidence significantly lower HRQOL than healthy peers, supporting need for intervention. Those with relapsing disease appear particularly at risk; targeting disability and fatigue may be fruitful areas for intervention. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Psychology)

Commentary: The Science of Adolescent and Young Adult Health: A Growing Field and the Team Science Behind It
Nearly 15  years ago, as an Adolescent Medicine fellow in a large pediatric academic institution, I was working furiously on conceptualizing my scholarly work—alone, at my computer. Then, I crossed paths serendipitously with a collaborator who changed my life and the trajectory of my academic career. She was a psychologist. Although there are some psychologists who are Chiefs of Adolescent Medicine divisions throughout the country, I rarely crossed paths with psychologists as Adolescent Medicine is largely a medical subspecialty requiring board certification. Either way, it should not have surprised me that our combine...

Childhood ADHD Symptoms and Future Illicit Drug Use: The Role of Adolescent Cigarette Use
ConclusionsThe findings support the notion that smoking status during early adolescence may mediate the association between childhood ADHD symptoms and risk of later adult drug use. Interventions to prevent smoking among adolescents may be particularly effective at decreasing subsequent drug use, especially among children with ADHD symptoms.
