Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Mandates: Current Landscape and Legal Considerations for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The opioid crisis continues to plague the lives of millions of Americans.1 One of many legal interventions aimed at addressing opioid misuse is with the implementation of prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs). Such legislation is not new but has gained traction over the past several decades with both social and political recognition of the opioid epidemic. Modern PDMPs serve as electronic databases to track dispensing of controlled substances to provide healthcare providers, including oral and maxillofacial surgeons, with relevant patient prescription data. Trends in Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Search Activity and Opioid Prescribing by Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeons in Massachusetts 2016-2022
Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), which monitor controlled substances dispensed to patients, have been implemented by states as a clinical tool to promote responsible opioid prescribing and minimize drug diversion. By 2021, all 50 states had created PDMPs, though not all states mandate their use. Massachusetts passed legislation mandating prescribers check the PDMP prior to prescribing any Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) schedule II or III opioid medications beginning in October 2016. RE: The Impacted Maxillary Canine in the Adult: A Narrative Review and Implant Treatment Options
I would like to thank Drs Hartman and Block for their narrative review and discussion of implant options for the retained impacted maxillary canine in adult patients.1 Their discussion of the various options for dealing with this relatively common clinical issue is a valuable addition to the literature. It also an excellent tool to provide practitioners with various approaches to this situation based on the patient's specific needs. (Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)
