Diet and Liver Adiposity in Older Adults: The Multiethnic Cohort Adiposity Phenotype Study
ConclusionsThis study of ethnically diverse older adults shows that certain dietary factors, in particular red meat and saturated fat from red meat, were strongly associated with liver fat, whereas dietary fiber was inversely associated with liver fat, replicating some of the previous studies conducted mostly in whites. Dietary Patterns Characterized by Fat Type in Association with Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes: A Longitudinal Study of UK Biobank Participants
ConclusionsThese findings provide evidence that a dietary pattern characterized by higher SFA and lower PUFA foods is associated with obesity and abdominal obesity incidence, but not T2D. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Intake of Nuts and Seeds Is Associated with a Lower Prevalence of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in US Adults: Findings from 2005 –2018 NHANES
ConclusionsDaily consumption for nuts and seeds was associated with a lower prevalence of NAFLD in non-Mediterranean, US adults, although the benefits seem to be greater in females across all categories of nut and seed consumption groups compared with nonconsumers. Both males and females presented with lower prevalence of NAFLD with intakes of 15 –30 g/d. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Diet Quality following Total Meal Replacement Compared with Food-Based Weight-Loss Diets in Postmenopausal Women with Obesity: A Secondary Analysis of the TEMPO Diet Trial
ConclusionsIn postmenopausal women with obesity, weight-loss interventions that involve either a total meal-replacement diet or a food-based diet both improve diet quality, however, not sufficiently to meet recommendations. This highlights the importance of addressing diet quality as a part of all dietary weight-loss interventions. This trial is registered with the Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry as 12612000651886. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Changes in Dietary Magnesium Intake and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Middle School Students: Using Data from the HEALTHY Study
ConclusionsWe conclude that a multicomponent intervention was associated with reduced risk of T2DM, and that this association may be modulated, in part, by magnesium. The differences in dietary magnesium intake from 6th to 8th grade were negatively related to changes in BMI percentile among middle-school students. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Oligosaccharides and Microbiota in Human Milk Are Interrelated at 3 Months Postpartum in a Cohort of Women with a High Prevalence of Gestational Impaired Glucose Tolerance
ConclusionsHMOs are associated with the microbial composition and predicted microbial functions in human milk at 3 mo postpartum. Further research is needed to investigate the role these relations play in maternal and infant health. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Supplemental Watermelon Juice Attenuates Acute Hyperglycemia-Induced Macro-and Microvascular Dysfunction in Healthy Adults
ConclusionsTwo weeks of daily WMJ supplementation improved FMD and some aspects of microvascular function (NIRS-VOT) during experimentally induced acute hyperglycemia in healthy adults. Preserved postprandial endothelial function and enhanced skeletal muscle StO2% are likely partially mediated by increased NO production (via citrulline conversion into arginine) and by the potential antioxidant effect of other bioactive compounds in WMJ. Identification of Selenoprotein H Isoforms and Impact of Selenoprotein H Overexpression on Protein But Not mRNA Levels of 2 Other Selenoproteins in 293T Cells
ConclusionsThese cellular studies demonstrate a Se-independent, shortened SELENOH variant and suggest competition of overexpressed FLAG-SELENOH with 2 other selenoproteins for the expression at the protein but not the mRNA level in Se insufficiency. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Associations Between Human Milk Oligosaccharides at 1 Month and Infant Development Throughout the First Year of Life in a Brazilian Cohort
ConclusionsHigher concentrations of LNT HMOs in Brazilian women are associated with their infants being less likely to be at risk of inadequate development for personal-social skills or for ≥2 developmental domains during the first year of life. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)
